The Gold Rush Era (1850s–1860s)
• John Alloo’s Chinese Restaurant Site: Long before the brick building was erected, this exact location (spanning 13 to 19 Main Road) was the site of John Alloo's Chinese Restaurant. Opened in the early 1850s, it is famously celebrated as the very first Chinese restaurant on the Victorian goldfields. It was a massive, bustling canvas-and-timber structure that served both European and Chinese miners during the peak of the diggings.
