๐Ÿ”ตโšช๏ธ๐ŸŸข On this day we commemorate Mer Island man Eddie โ€˜Koikiโ€™ Mabo setting Native Title precedent and his successful efforts to overturn the legal fiction of terra nullius, or โ€˜land belonging to no-oneโ€™. ๐Ÿ”ด๐ŸŸกโšซ๏ธ๏ฟฝ
โ€˜My name is Edward Mabo, but my island name is Koiki. My family has occupied the land here for hundreds of years before
Captain Cook was born. They are now trying to say I cannot own it.โ€™๏ฟฝ
๐Ÿ“œIn 1982 Eddie Mabo and four other Mer Islanders started a land rights action in the High Court of Australia. They claimed that their land rights had not been extinguished when the islands became a colony of Queensland in 1879. Ten years later the High Court handed down the groundbreaking judgment that overturned the doctrine of terra nullius - the theory that nobody inhabited Australia when the British arrived in 1788.๏ฟฝ

๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’™ Today, 29 May, we acknowledge Torres Strait Islander Flag Day โ€” a day that recognises the significance of the Torres Strait Islander Flag and its equal prominence alongside the Aboriginal Flag as an official flag of Australia.

Designed by the late Mr Bernard Namok in 1992, the flag is a powerful symbol of identity, unity, culture and connection for Torres Strait Islander peoples.

โ€œWhat my design stands for is quite simple: The two green bands are the two mainland of Australia & Papua New Guinea. The blue is the waters of the Torres Strait and the symbol that identifies every Torres Strait Islanders anywhere, the Dhari (Headdress).
The five points of the star are our group the Eastern, Central, Western, Port Kennedy group and the many that made the mainland their home. I would like to thank those of you who have accepted my design and in time, those of you who will.โ€๏ฟฝโ€” Mr Bernard Namok

Today we honour the enduring strength, resilience and cultural pride of Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise the important legacy of the Torres Strait Islander Flag.

๐ŸคALL IN โ€˜The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is All In, a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

All In makes clear that reconciliation is not a spectator sport and that all of us must step away from the sidelines and take action to make change.

The theme also reminds us that reconciliation and advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoplesโ€™ rights isnโ€™t a passive activity, and it is not solely the responsibility of First Nations people, who have carried the weight of championing, explaining and acting for far too long.
Reconciliation will not happen by itself, and it will not happen without all of us.
โ€™ -Reconciliation Australia

๐Ÿ”ด๐ŸŸกโšซ๏ธ NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK โ€“ 27 May to 3 June is a time to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. ๐Ÿ”ตโšช๏ธ๐ŸŸข

๐Ÿ“œAs National Reconciliation Week commences, today we also commemorate the 1967 Referendum. ๏ฟฝ
โ€˜One of the most important outcomes of the referendum was to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with a symbol of recognition. The recognition of inequalities gave the 1967 referendum longstanding significance for all Australians.โ€™

๐Ÿ‘ŠNow more than ever to show we are โ€˜all inโ€™ we must take time to recognise the significance of historical achievements, like the referendum. ๏ฟฝ

โค๏ธโ€๐ŸฉนOn 26 May each year, we observe National Sorry Day โ€” a day of remembrance, reflection and truth-telling about one of the most painful chapters in Australiaโ€™s history: the Stolen Generations.

Today, we honour the strength, resilience and survival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families and communities impacted by forced removals and ongoing intergenerational trauma.

This yearโ€™s national theme, From Sorry to Action, reminds us that acknowledgment alone is not enough. Sorry without action cannot create lasting change. This moment calls for leadership, accountability and meaningful action to improve outcomes for survivors within their lifetimes.

As Australians, we all have a role to play โ€” by listening deeply, learning truthfully, standing in solidarity and supporting reconciliation through tangible actions every day.

๐ŸซถAs a sign of respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures, the Aboriginal Flag and Torres Strait Islander Flag are flown alongside the Australian National Flag throughout National Reconciliation Week โ€” symbols of unity, respect and hope for a more reconciled future.
