We can help protect our oceans by raising awareness about their importance, helping to end overfishing by choosing sustainably sourced seafood, picking up rubbish, and donating to conservation efforts 🐟

The ocean produces over half of the world’s oxygen and absorbs 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere 🌿

Covering 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, the ocean transports heat from the equator to the poles, regulating our climate and weather patterns 🌨

Hundreds of thousands (actually more like millions) of species call the ocean home 🦑

I’m so grateful to live in this beautiful, diverse state full of natural wonders and fantastic people 🌿

Western Australia is home to:
* 141 of Australia’s 207 mammal species, 25 endemic to the state
* more than 400 reptile species, more than 40% unique to the state
* over 500 bird species, 18 of which are endemic to the state
* 78 amphibian species, 38 of which are unique to the state
* more than 1,600 fish species
* hundreds of thousands of invertebrate species
* one of the most diverse and unique floras in the world, with over 210 vascular plant families, and 50-80% of species being unique to the state in the largest of these families.

You can save our bees by planting a variety of these plant species for food, to ensure flowers throughout the year. Also, provide shallow dishes of water with stones so that they can drink without drowning 🌷

🍃 Happy National Endangered Species Day 🐨

Australia is such an important continent for biodiversity, and many of Australia’s species are endemic, meaning that they are found nowhere else in the world. The rates of endangered and extinct species in Australia is alarming, and a trend that must be reversed.

• Australia has more endemic reptiles and mammals than any other country in the world; more endemic plants than 98% of other countries; more endemic birds than 99% of other countries; and more endemic amphibians 97% of other countries in the world.

• 87% of Australia’s 386 species are endemic, 78 species are at risk of extinction (20%), 30 species have been lost to extinction in the past 200 years.

• Vascular plants: 92% of Australia’s vascular plants are endemic. Australia has one of the worst record for vascular plant extinctions in the world, with 83 species extinct since European settlement.

• 126 plant and animal species known to have gone extinct in 200 years, with 1700 species listed at risk of extinction. Australia has experienced one of the highest losses of species anywhere in the world, and this is a trend that we need to reverse.
