🌸 National Threatened Species Day 🌿

Celebrated on this day each year because the last Tasmanian Tiger went extinct on September 7th in 1936 🍃

Today we shine a spotlight on the 2000+ Australian flora and fauna species that are listed as ‘threatened’ in Australia. We need to look after them every day! 🌿

Here are some ways you can protect threatened species:

* protect native habitat by planting local flora species;
* create wild spaces in your garden with logs, leaves and water access;
* reduce light pollution;
* be a responsible pet owner and keep dogs and cats secured at home;
* use wildlife friendly rodent control methods, preventing secondary poisoning;
* when out in nature- take only photos, leave only footprints;
* never take firewood from undesignated bush areas;
* slow down for wildlife on the roads;
* help population monitoring by being a citizen scientist- record species on platforms like iNaturalist;
* support the efforts of conservation groups.

What else would you add to this list? 💚

🌊Shark awareness day 🦈

Whalesharks are sharks (not whales), and they mainly feed on plankton that they filter feed.

They pose no threat to humans, as they are gentle, slow moving animals with teeth only 6mm long.

The pattern on each whaleshark is unique to the individual, and photos of these assist scientists with identification and research.

Although not enough is known about whaleshark biology and breeding, it is clear that they are under threat by unsustainable fishing practises as they are slow to reproduce.

Whalesharks are one of the most vulnerable marine animals in the world, according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Have you been swimming with Whalesharks or is it on your to do list? 💙🦈

🌙✨ Winter Solstice 🌏

Today (21st June) is the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere- the shortest day of the year 🌏

The Solstice happened at 1624hrs AWST this afternoon and Perth had 10 hours and 3 minutes of sunlight today ⛅️

This solstice marks the start of astronomical winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere ☀️

Solstices and equinoxes happen because of the earth’s tilted axis and orbit around the sun. The Southern Hemisphere is currently tilted away from the sun which is why the days are shorter and the weather is cooler 🌦

Enjoy the long nights at the moment and time to celebrate the days getting longer from now on ☀️

🌊 World Ocean Day 🦈

We can help protect our oceans by raising awareness about their importance, helping to end overfishing by choosing sustainably sourced seafood, picking up rubbish, and donating to conservation efforts 🐟

The ocean produces over half of the world’s oxygen and absorbs 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere 🌿

Covering 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, the ocean transports heat from the equator to the poles, regulating our climate and weather patterns 🌨

Hundreds of thousands (actually more like millions) of species call the ocean home 🦑

We need to work together to look after our oceans and their inhabitants 🐬
