What are we reading? -'Department of the Vanishing' by Johanna Bell.

Johanna Bell is a poet, an award winning children’s book author and now has written her first verse novel which promptly won the 2025 Tasmanian Literature award.

The 'Department of the Vanishing’ of the title, is a near future government department that collates archival material on extinct species. Ava Wilde is tasked with archiving the Lyrebird, a task that uncovers threads of a family mystery. Like a lyrebird gathers songs, Johanna Bell has gathered photos, poetry, scientific facts and fictional news stories to create a spellbinding narrative of the extinction crisis, twisted around a mystery and a love story. George Orwell meets Dorothy Porter, brilliant and unforgettable.

will be at talking both Children’s imagination and Tasmania's Vanishing Wild.

Just in time for Father’s Day - ’The Second Child’ takes us back into the world of Stalin and his brutal right-hand man Lavrentiy Beria, that so brilliantly portrayed in ‘The First Friend’. This time it is in the closing stages of the Second World War. A dark satire that lays bare the violence, chaos and political machinations of this period while casting a keen key to our current world.

Only now is the true callousness of Erin Patterson being revealed. And Duncan McNab reveals all about the case.

These are the facts:

On 29 July 2023 in Leongatha, a small town in rural Victoria, family and friends of local woman Erin Patterson sat down for Saturday lunch. On the menu, Beef Wellington. The next day, four of the guests were hospitalised. Within a week, three of them were dead. When Erin Patterson was arrested and charged with three counts of murder and five of attempted murder, the case captured media attention around the world. A jury of her peers have now decided that Erin Patterson deliberately poisoned her estranged husband’s parents, aunt and uncle. The lunch was a recipe for murder. Her crocodile tears and feigned illness did not fool the police or the jury.

But was this the first time Erin Patterson tried to poison someone she loved? And how did she prepare? Patterson’s cruelty in watching four people who had been nothing but kind and loving to her eat a meal she knew would kill them was the ultimate act of betrayal.

Bestselling author, investigative journalist and former detective, Duncan McNab has sifted through the evidence and attended the nine-week trial to explain in gripping detail the sequence of events that left Gail Patterson, Don Patterson and Heather Wilkinson dead and Ian Wilkinson fighting to survive. With forensic detail he shows how the lethal plot unfolded and reveals the many ways Patterson followed through with no pity for her victims. He delivers an explosive book that gives us the whole, cold, calculating story.
