Plastic Free July isn't about being perfect. It's about thousands of small choices that, together, make a real difference. Look for food in glass jars or cardboard boxes
(without a plastic lining) or buy at bulk food shops eg Palestine Fair Trade Australia olive oil in bottles Swap all plastic cooking utensils and chopping boards for wooden or stainless steel options eg kayuandco.au wooden boards, bowls and spoons Swap cling film for tin foil, beeswax wraps, cotton food bags, or a ceramic plate to cover food eg AfriBeads wax wraps Don't use individual plastic bags for fruit and veg. Take your own bags eg All of the Good Things AfriBeads produce bags, WEFTshop shopping bags, Auroraz Soulful Gifts cotton bags Use natural cleaning eg natural body brushes and kitchen brushes Eco Max Brushes, dustpan and brush from kayuandco.au Replace your plastic containers with glass, ceramic, natural fibres or steel eg Bozy baskets, Aksa Home Decor wood boxes, Palestine Fair Trade ceramic bowls Avoid buying plastic toys, milk bottles and teething rings for babies and toddlers eg Earthica Australia knitted cotton toys, Fair Trade - Hands & Hearts cotton educational play sets, Serendib Craftlink wooden puzzles Try shampoo and soap in solid bars instead of plastic bottles eg Palestine Fair Trade olive soap Opt for natural materials, like cotton, h**p or wool; avoid polyester eg Koguis Jewellry and Fair Trade Handicrafts from Colombia, South America scarves and Global Mamas cotton dresses and tops, Global Conduct cotton scarves, Earthica Australia alpaca jumpers, The Elephant Emporium cotton socks, Milestone Myanmar Souvenir Kingdom silk scarves Use a keep cup to take away coffee eg Uplift Fair Trade ceramic cups
Plastic tips from the Perth Project University of Western Australia

20/07/2026

Swap out the plastic! Wear natural fibres. Find at Rozelle at Fair Trade Gifts, in Marrickville at The Fair Trade Emporium and Katoomba at Uplift Fair Trade.
Fabrics like nylon and polyester are plastic and derived from the petroleum industry. Every wash and wear sheds microplastic fibres, which end up in our oceans and our bodies, harming marine life and our health.
Find fair trade sustainable alternatives.
- FASHION choose cotton, wool, linen, silk such as Koguis Jewellry cotton dresses from Global Mamas, leather shoes and bags from Colombia; Global Conduct cotton scarves; Earthica Australia alpaca jumpers and cotton baby clothes; cotton socks from The Elephant Emporium
- KITCHEN choose wood, glass, metal, natural fibre such as ceramics from Aksa Home Decor and Palestine Fair Trade Australia; baskets from Bozy and AfriBeads; wooden chopping boards and utensils from kayuandco.au
- FOOD SHOPPING take your own bags for fruit and veg such as produce bags from All of the Good Things, Myanmar cotton bags from WEFTshop and Milestone Myanmar Souvenir Kingdom; Indian bags from Auroraz Soulful Gifts
- GROCERIES Choose food in glass, not plastic bags or plastic lined tins, such as olive oil in glass from Palestine Fair Trade
- CLEANING with natural bristle brushes and home compostable dish cloths such as ImportAnts natural coconut bristle brushes
- STORE food in wax wraps and glass containers such as wax wraps from AfriBeads
- BATHROOM use soap bars and shampoo bars such as Palestine Fair Trade olive oil soap
- CHILDREN toys such as cotton play sets from Fair Trade - Hands & Hearts, wooden toys from kayuandco.au, knitted cotton rattles from Earthica Australia
- COFFEE cup, not throw away, such as from Uplift Fair Trade
