Liane Moriarty fans... it’s here!!

'Big Little Truths' arrived in store today, returning us to Madeline, Celeste and Jane ten years after the events of 'Big Little Lies'.

The kids are no longer kids. Madeline is planning her 50th. Jane is happily married, isn’t she? Celeste is still living with the reverberations of Perry’s death. Then an anonymous package containing a severed finger arrives at the school, and old secrets begin to feel dangerously unsettled.

Moriarty is back in familiar territory: friendship, marriage, motherhood, secrets, suspicion, and the uncomfortable question of what happens when the truth finally refuses to stay buried.

We’ve received a rather large number of LARGE-format books at Benn’s this week, covering just about everything: The Verandah, The Aussie BBQ Bible, Ireland, Scotland,Amazing Gardens, and copies of the late, great Roy Orbison’s bio.

…And keeping a watchful eye over the whole collection are some rather magnificent OWLS. 🦉

Meanwhile, Omar Musa’s Fierceland is photobombing from the back of frame, which is well worth a look if you haven’t already. 😁

Verandahs, BBQs, Owls, pharaohs, gardens, Roy Orbison and owls!

It’s been a hoot!

Father’s Day is fast approaching - Sunday 6 September - and, while there’s nothing technically wrong with socks, we think Dad deserves something a little bit more interesting.

Full of excellent possibilities, from gripping new fiction and history to sport, food, travel, memoir and more, our showcase of Father’s Day gift ideas is a very good place to start if you’re looking for a little inspiration.

Well, look who's made the papers!

Benn's Books has been given a lovely write-up in the latest Glen Eira News, celebrating more than 45 years of books, obscure requests and literary detective work to track down that elusive publication.

Simon (pictured) also featured in Cr Arabella Daniel's accompanying video where he speaks of the importance of books in bringing community together to share ideas.

Thanks to Cr Daniel and the City of Glen Eira for shining a light on one of Bentleigh's enduring little institution.

We hope to see you in the store soon!

First-time short-listee Omar Musa has won the 2026 Miles Franklin Literary Award for his novel, Fierceland.

When describing this year’s winning novel, the judges said, “Omar Musa's Fierceland is a tour de force set against the backdrop of the destruction of Borneo's rainforests. Cleared to make way for palm oil plantations, this pulsing forest world is the moral centre of Fierceland and Musa’s rhythmic prose hums its defiance. In the human drama, siblings Harun and Rozana gradually realise that even in Sydney and Los Angeles, they cannot outrun the fraught legacy of their father, a palm-oil baron in Sabah. As it charts a journey of personal and planetary redemption, Fierceland refashions the venerable, vernacular hikayat traditions of Malay storytelling into new Australian idioms.”

A new book from Richard Flanagan is always a significant literary event.

Heresies: Occasional Pieces gathers twenty years of Flanagan’s essays, articles and speeches, ranging across Manus and MONA, birds and the Black Summer, ecological destruction, Indigenous Australia, democracy, family and love. Provocative, searching and animated by his characteristic humanity, these pieces ask what it means to write freely, to resist received orthodoxies and, when necessary, to say the unsayable.

Described by The Washington Post as “one of our greatest living novelists” and by the New York Review of Books as “among the most versatile writers in the English language”, Flanagan is also the only author to have won both the Booker Prize and the Baillie Gifford Prize. In Heresies, that extraordinary range is revealed beyond fiction: intellectually fearless, subversively witty and, amid troubled times, unexpectedly hopeful.

Heresies is in store now, or available to order online.
