Before the Reno — Part 1: Measure everything twice 📐

You may already have a floor plan, which is an amazing place to start.

We didn’t really have that luxury. Our home was owner-built and, let’s just say, the plans aren’t exactly 100 per cent accurate.

Whether you have a floor plan or you’re starting with a rough sketch, measure more than the overall room. Record your windows, doorways, ceiling heights, skirting boards, trims and the spaces in between.

It doesn’t need to look fancy—it just needs to make sense to you.

Then, when you think you’re finished, measure everything again. A few centimetres might not sound like much until your cabinetry or furniture doesn’t fit.

Save this one if you’re planning a renovation or room makeover.

Something you might not know about me: before opening Birre Home, I studied interior decorating.

Also something you should know: I stumble over my words in the first 15 seconds of this video and simply could not be bothered filming it again. 😂 So we’re rolling with it.

Now we’re getting ready to renovate the upstairs of our own home, so I finally get to put everything I learnt into practice, with the added pressure of knowing that if I make a questionable decision, I’ll have to live with it. 😂

I’m starting a new series called Before the Reno, sharing the things I’m doing as an interior decorator before we begin.

There’ll be measuring, inspiration, planning, moodboards, lots of samples and probably around 5 to 10 changes of mind.

This won’t be a perfectly polished renovation series. I’ll share what I choose, why I choose it, what I learn and anything that doesn’t quite go to plan.

Follow along if you’re renovating, decorating or simply enjoy watching someone else make all the decisions.

August business update 🌸

Well… we were away for half the month, and the half we were here was pretty quiet 😅

So this month’s business goal was basically: pay the rent 😂 And we did. Calling that a win.

A few new products and some much-needed restocks have started arriving, with plenty more to come as I slowly start thinking about Christmas 🎄 (yes, already).

I also found out my Social Media Marketing Diploma is being superseded, which meant I either had to finish it by February. Absolutely not happening 😂or transfer to the new version. So I’ve transferred… and pretty much have to start again. BOO.

On a much more exciting note, we’re planning to renovate the upstairs of our house over the next six months, and I thought I might bring you along for that too. I’ll share some of the design process, decisions and probably a few mistakes along the way.

And with Father’s Day just around the corner, we’ve got a small selection of gifts for the fellas in store and online 🎁

Now we head into September with two very glamorous small-business goals:

💸 Pay the rent
🎄 Start buying Christmas stock
