Truly one of my greatest glass finds in a career that has featured glass from across the globe very heavily.
As with all of the finest antique glass, it began it's life in Bohemia around 1830 in the innovative workshop of Master Glassmaker Friedrich Egermann. The rich swirling colour was designed to emulate carved marble or semi-precious stone.
To have survived in such exemplary condition for almost 200 years is a testament to the esteem in which the original owners held this piece as well as the chemical structure of the glass itself. You see for Egemann it was not enough to simply design pretty vases, he developed the entire technique, including chemical makeup himself. No other workshop before or since has managed to emulate its unique properties or produce any items of such quality and beauty.
