September is Sports Eye Safety Month!

Whether playing socially or competitively, protecting the eyes is an important part of staying safe in sport.

For people who wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, appropriate vision correction and protection can be particularly important when playing sport 👁

Different sports place different demands on vision, and appropriate eyewear can support eye protection and visual comfort.

Protective eyewear suited to the sport or activity can help reduce the risk of eye injuries from impact, fast-moving objects and unexpected contact. For outdoor sports, UV-protective eyewear can also help reduce exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation 🕶☀️

For swimming and water sports, suitable eyewear can help shield the eyes from potential irritants such as chlorine and salt water 🌊

This Sports Eye Safety Month, make eye protection part of the game plan. Speak with a local optometrist about suitable eye protection for different sports and activities.

👀 Screens getting the better of your eyes?

If you're finishing the day with gritty, tired or watery eyes, you're not alone — long screen hours combined with office air conditioning are a common (and often overlooked) combo behind dry eye symptoms.

The good news: small changes to your desk setup, blinking habits and breaks can make a real difference.

We've put together a full guide on what's causing it and how to find relief 👇

Spring may still be around the corner, but allergy season can creep up on you if you're not prepared 🌼

For many people, increased pollen levels can lead to itchy, watery and irritated eyes.

A few simple habits can help minimise symptoms:

• Wear glasses outdoors to help reduce pollen exposure 🕶️

• Wash your hands regularly and use lubricating eye drops if recommended by your optometrist 💧

• Avoid rubbing your eyes if they become irritated, as this may worsen symptoms

Taking a few simple precautions now may help you enjoy the change in seasons with greater comfort 🌳

It's Contact Lens Health Week, and we're highlighting a few best practices to support healthy contact lens habits.

A surprisingly common question we hear is whether it's okay to sleep in contact lenses 💤

Unless your optometrist has advised that your contact lenses ARE suitable for overnight wear, it's generally not recommended to sleep in them, even for a short nap.

Sleeping in contact lenses can increase the risk of dryness, irritation and infection.

If you've accidentally fallen asleep wearing your lenses, don't panic. Remove them as soon as practical. If your eyes feel dry or uncomfortable, lubricating drops may help before attempting lens removal.

If you continue to experience discomfort or have difficulty removing your lenses, contact your optometrist for advice.

This Daffodil Day, we join the conversation around cancer awareness and support while shining a light on eye cancer 👁

Although eye cancer is less common than many other forms of cancer, it can affect people of all ages and may not always present noticeable symptoms.

One of the most common forms of eye cancer in adults is ocular melanoma, which usually develops in the middle layer of the eye, known as the uvea.

Regular eye examinations can play an important role in monitoring eye health and identifying changes within the eye that may require further assessment.

This Daffodil Day, take a moment to learn more about eye cancer, support those affected by cancer and prioritise your eye health.
