The ‘Gardening Fundamentals’ course contains three classes. Each class is a 2 hour morning session led by senior horticulturist Renee Holbrook at Brookfield Gardens.

ORCHIDS // Want your orchid to keep flowering and looking its best indoors? A few simple care tips can make all the difference.

Water wisely - Orchids don’t like sitting in water. Let the potting mix dry slightly between watering, then water thoroughly and allow it to drain completely.

Give them bright, indirect light - A spot near a bright window is ideal. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Let them breathe - Good airflow helps keep leaves and roots healthy. Avoid placing orchids in dark, stuffy corners.

Use the right potting mix - Orchids need a free-draining mix, usually made from bark and other chunky materials, rather than regular potting soil.

Feed during active growth -A suitable orchid fertiliser, used according to the label, can encourage strong growth and beautiful blooms.

After flowering - Don’t be too quick to give up on your orchid! With the right care, it can flower again.

The secret? Light, drainage, airflow and a little patience.

Kelli takes us through the simple task of watering this week. Water smarter, not just more.
Healthy gardens aren’t about constantly adding more water, they’re about making every drop count.

At Brookfield Gardens, we believe smart watering starts with the right setup:

Get your irrigation right, make sure your system is reaching the areas that actually need it, without wasting water.

Invest in a good hose and hose head, the right spray pattern gives you better control and helps avoid unnecessary runoff.

Water deeply, not constantly, encourage stronger, deeper roots by giving plants a thorough drink rather than frequent little splashes.

Choose the right time of day, early morning is ideal, when temperatures are cooler and less water is lost to evaporation.

And don’t forget to check your irrigation regularly. Leaks, blocked emitters and poorly positioned sprinklers can waste a surprising amount of water.

We’ll cover both edible and ornamental plants, with tips on choosing the right plants for success, and how to get the best from growing in containers. You’ll also learn a few design basics to help you create a beautiful, thriving space, no matter the size.

The session will include pests and disease troubleshooting, plus lots of time for questions.
