The window between now and the first proper Summer heatwave is shorter than it feels.

Spring is when everything's actively growing, so the work you do now pays off for months. Plants put in this month get a head start on their roots. Leave it till December and you're planting into hot, dry soil and pulling weeds that have already gone to seed.

None of these jobs are big on their own. Knock off one or two each weekend and you'll be ahead before it warms up.

Pruning while it's still in flower is the quickest way to lose next season's blooms.

A lot of flowering plants are already setting their next lot of buds. Cut too early and you're snipping those off before they get a chance.

So wait until the flowers have finished. Then tip prune just above a new leaf node and the plant will push out new growth from there, which is how you end up with a fuller, bushier shape.

One rule we always stick to: never take more than a third of the plant in one go.

Finish with a feed and a good water and it'll be set up for the next round of flowers.

Most hedge regrets start with a cute little pot that grows into a job you're doing every second weekend.

A short hedge gives you the structure without the ladder. Edge a garden bed, line a path or hide the bins, and keep the whole thing somewhere between knee and hip height.

We've picked five that stay compact and actually enjoy a trim. Two are natives, three of them flower, and one will happily become a ball, a cube or whatever shape you've got in mind.

The one spot in the garden nobody knows what to do with is the top of the retaining wall!

It's either bare, or it's got that one plant that never really took off. And because it's hard to reach, it's the last thing anyone gets round to fixing.

The fix is a ground cover that's happy to spill. Something that drapes over the edge, softens all that hard block or timber, and covers the gap without you fussing over it every weekend.

We've put our five favourites in the slides. Two natives for full sun, one for the shady side, one that will cope with a wall that cops the afternoon heat, and Silver Falls, which is the one people stop and ask about.

Work out if your wall gets sun or shade before you pick. That decision does most of the work.
