Ever looked underneath the Plaza Theatre? 👀
Down amongst the foundations of Empire Revival is this beauty — a massive old support stump still wearing the scalloped marks of the adze that shaped it.
In Japan, those hand-worked marks were often celebrated as part of the timber’s beauty. Over here in the West, we tended to think, “Lovely… now let’s smooth that out.” 😂
So while most of these old timbers were dressed until they were perfectly round and polished, this one has kept the evidence of the bloke who actually made it.
The tool marks are the history.
And sometimes, the best stuff at Empire Revival is hiding underneath your feet.

A couple of beauties have just wandered into the Lumberyard. 👀
First up, a wonderfully gnarly Irish Shillelagh, complete with a Merrow (mermaid) engraved into the metal band. A proper piece of old-world craftsmanship with a story to match.
Then there’s the local heavyweight: a beautifully figured wooden cane topped with sterling silver, engraved “H. Haly, QN Bank.” Haly was manager of the Queensland National Bank at Laidley around the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the Haly family were pioneers of the district.
This wasn’t merely something to lean on — it was a statement of influence, status and wealth.
Two walking sticks, two cracking stories, and both now waiting at Shop66 / Empire Revival Paddo.
Come have a poke around. You never quite know what history is going to turn up. 🪵

I’m not saying this trip is going off the rails, but the pickles are already involved.

Just when you thought your side table couldn’t be more dangerous… 🐅
A delightful pair of MCM three-tier tiger cane side tables have just lumbered into the UL den at Empire Revival Paddo.
Because apparently, even your furniture needs a bit of roar power.
And while I’m on the road today, I’ll be making a little detour to restock Empire Revival Murwillumbah too. 🚚🪓

4.5 years. One hell of a ride. ❤️
Today marks the last day of The Emporium Kalbar as we’ve known it.
We’ve been there from the very beginning, and over the past four and a half years we’ve had the absolute joy of getting to know the building, the business, the town — and plenty of the wonderful people who make Kalbar what it is.
So yes, today comes with a touch of sadness.
But there’s some very good news…
We’re staying! 🎉
Under the new owners, Urban Lumberjack will continue bringing you some of the best antiques, vintage treasures and wonderfully old stuff the Scenic Rim has to offer.
A huge thank you, and much love, to Greg & Suzy for the opportunity, the friendship and for introducing us to Kalbar all those years ago. It’s been an absolute pleasure.
The Emporium may be turning a page, but this lumberjack isn’t putting down his axe just yet.
I’ll be here for a while yet. ❤️

Built to work. Too good not to admire. 🪨
A beautiful 14”+ antique sandstone grinding wheel, complete with its original wooden axle.
Once upon a time it was earning its keep on the farm. These days? Just as happy turning heads in a garden, courtyard or home.
Practical history with a bit of grunt. 🪓

A little Irish history, a little old-world storage, and one very fancy funnel. ☘️🪓
This reel takes a wander through a 19th-century print of The Trial of Robert Emmet, some wonderful earthenware demijohns, and a beautifully enamelled ½-gallon funnel.
Because apparently even funnels had to look good back in the day.
A few cracking pieces for the collector, restorer or general lover of old stuff at Shop66 / Empire Revival 🪓❤️

New handle day. And these are a bit special. 🪓🌳
A fresh shipment of Jimmy Findlay axe handles is heading into Shop66 / Empire Revival Paddo today — 30” Racing, 32”, 24” and hatchet handles in beautiful Spotted Gum.
And then there are four very special pieces for the axe that’s far too good to leave hanging on the wall:
