AFAS Elders had the privilege of meeting with Ms Sheryll L. Gabutero, Honorary Consul of the Philippines based in Brisbane.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss ways of strengthening collaboration with Filipino organisations sharing best practices, community insights and approaches to capacity building.

We are grateful for the opportunity to connect and look forward to continuing to build stronger relationships and support within Brisbane’s Filipino community 🇵🇭

Since AFAS was first established, the Philippines has experienced extraordinary economic growth.

It is currently one of the fastest growing economies in the Asian region, with electronics, minerals and agriculture three of their biggest exports.

Despite this impressive growth, poverty remains an enduring feature of the country - sharply felt in the Philippine's rural/urban divide, among classes and in political dynasties.

This goes to show that meaningful change is often nuanced. It takes time. It takes listening. And it takes an appreciation for the historical circumstances that the Philippines operates in.

That is where humility and solidarity, those Augustinian virtues, come into their own. Humility, to recognise that development does not wear a single face, that it shifts depending on where you stand, and that truth requires a constant willingness to interrogate your own assumptions. And solidarity, to take that understanding and embed it in a relationship of equals, walking a journey together as Australian and Filipino partners.

At AFAS Elders, we hold to that principle, not as observers, or tourists, but as partners
