Happy new year to you and your families! This year took a toll on the majority of us, going into survivor mode, pausing and taking stock of what was really important to us. One of my pauses was on book creating and illustrating. Sad as it was, I had to prioritise my energy on getting through all the changes that 2021 challenged us with. So here's to new hopes, and opportunities for new possibilities! 🥰

What I love about books is how we can be consumed by an imaginary world, living as if our lives were magically part of the story as we flip page by page.
Sometimes we discover a new world, see something from a different worldview or feel differently about ourselves. It's so candid, how we can be lost and found in the pages of a book!

Gosh a pause in writing is nothing to do with writer's block. It's about being creative on demand. That takes discipline and patience. Both rare to come by when you work full time and parent two children. Can anyone relate??

This week's book treasure find is 'The Hike' by Alison Farrell, a story about the adventures of 3 explorers, featuring botanics, creatures, and wonderfully illustrated. Alison captures everything I love about exploring the great outdoors 🌲✍️🔭💕
She represents diversity in the sisterhood of life and throws in funny moments like overindulgence on berries. 🙋🏻‍♀️🤭

Character development is so much fun! My favourite part of this creative process is making faces and drawing them. My kids especially love this activity! I can't wait to make them some colouring-in books. . . Next project after I finish up this children's book.

Well I was definitely overly optimistic with my book illustrating deadlines! Who else has this problem? I thought I'd be able to get it all done by Christmas! Surprise, only 2 sleeps left! Even when I focus on Done and not Perfection, I needed to be realistic about what was actually achievable with two little ones at home for the school holidays 😁

I know art is a creative process, it's slow and steady, it's iterative, it's always growing along with your skills and the risks you're willing to take with art. I've finished storyboarding, and have been working on developing the story characters. So many stories, not enough quiet illustrating time!!!

Another great library find for kids to explore endangered species, the red panda. These beautiful fluffy mammals are estimated at less than 10,000 left in the wild Himalayan mountains.

The story introduces the concept of habitat loss and hope while Pip and mum search for the bamboo path. It's an excellent picture book for all ages.
