With the recent incursion of Varroa mite into Australia causing a 95% reduction in wild honeybee populations, gardeners have an important opportunity to help attract and support bees in their gardens and home orchards.

Bees play a vital role in pollinating fruit trees, veggies, herbs and flowers. As wild honeybee activity declines, planting the right mix of nectar- and pollen-rich plants can help keep your garden productive and full of life.

Choose flowering plants that bloom across the seasons, plant them in groups around your fruit trees, avoid spraying during the middle of the day when bees are most active, and provide shallow water with pebbles for safe drinking.

Bailey entered a few photos of his Marigolds, which he grows on the NSW Mid North Coast under 50% shade cloth. French marigold petals are edible and can be used as a colourful garnish.
