A big thank you to the Broken Hill Ys Men for their generous donation that helped us to be able to buy a couple of laptops for the staff and volunteers to use - the 90s can now have their dialup speeds back!
The Ys Men are able to provide support to organisations such as ours through the generosity of the Broken Hill community. If you would like to help support you can donate to them - you can also attend the meat raffle at the Workies on a Friday - you might even get a tray of chops!

Last night’s Book Club meeting was our first at the Astra and this venue seemed to work really well. It was cosy, comfortable and also quiet… once we discovered there was a door we could slide shut… well done Terry! Our choices for the theme of “Translated into English” included books translated from Japanese, Korean, Italian, French, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and Icelandic. Congratulations to Georgie for reading (and finishing) the Count of Monte Cristo, weighing in at around 1200 pages! Georgie said she really enjoyed this classic, which she has been meaning to read for a long time. One of the great things about the Book Club is that it can give you that extra motivation to pick up a book you have been meaning to get to.

Next month’s theme is “A Genre I Don’t Usually Read” meeting at the Astra Hotel, 7.30pm on Wednesday the 12th of August. All welcome!

Hello Book Lovers! Did you know that apart from having a broad range of second hand books and new books by local authors, we have a selection of old and rare, and sometimes very curious books. Such as this German phrase book, published during World War II in 1943 - containing phrases such as “what colour were the uniforms?” (Welche Farbe hatten die Uniformen?” And “have any mines been planted?” (Haben sie Minem gelegt?). There is also what looks like a poem or a hymn that might have been used as a book mark. Online this book can sell for $47 for one in similar (very used) condition, but it could be yours for just $15!

Just landed at Under the Silver Tree... the new School of the Air cookbook, brimming with delicious recipes and lovely photos of the kids out on their properties 😀 It’s a real Outback treat and also a fundraiser for the school

Price is $40 for this beautifully produced hardback

📣Calling on all our history & cinema buffs! Do you have fond memories of attending Broken Hill’s drive-in and historic cinemas🎥? Exciting news for you....Just in at Under the Silver Tree is an exciting new book about picture theatres and drive-ins of SA and Broken Hill🎊

Pictured below👇 is the book’s author, Scott Smith, at his book launch... appropriately at our much-loved Silver City Cinema. The book is a beautifully produced hardcover in a slipcase - a perfect showpiece for your coffee table.

Price is $85, with a special price of $75 for our bookshop members.

Book Lovers, did you know that we have every range of genre you could want in a bookshop? 📚 Just take a gander below at our lovely volunteers presenting their favourite genre👇

📕Geoff presents our section on biographies and autobiographies where he has picked out one of our latest donations - a gem about Hugh Bonneville, the English actor best known for his role in the historical drama series Downton Abbey.

📘The lovely Leanne, a huge fan of the crime/thriller genre, of which we have a hugely wonderful array of treasures. Leanne's favourite - Tara Moss', the Canadian-Australian author behind best-selling gems 'The Ghosts of Paris' and 'The Blood Countess'.

📗And, the lovely Jean is hanging over in our Classic Literature section showcasing two of her more recent favourites by Thomas Hardy and Jenny Erpenbeck, winner of the International Booker Prize in 2024.

Do drop by and have a fossick🔍, you just never know what little treasure you will dig up.

Dear Book Lovers, today we would like to acknowledge and celebrate the legendary conservationist Sir David Attenborough who turns a whopping 100 today! 🎊🎊

An incredible milestone for an incredible human being who continues his lifelong misson of environmental education & advocacy. As well as pioneering wildlife 🐯broadcasting, Sir David's documentaries have prompted signficant real-world changes, particularly in reducing plastic pollution and increasing awareness of climate change 🌏

Fun Fact! Sir David Attenborough was knighted twice (1985 and 2022) and has over 50 species named in his honor. What a legend!

From all of us here at Under the Silver Tree we wish Sir David the happiest of birthdays! 🎂🎊

Hidey ho there Book Lovers, we've just had the most interesting visitor drop by. Meet Sarah. She is the latest Artist in Residence 👩🏻‍🎨 here in Broken Hill with an interesting connection to our fair town.

Sarah's great great-grandmother Katie Martin moved to Broken Hill in 1930 from Wales as a young lady. By 1940 she was married and teaching piano 🎹 to Broken Hill children in the front room of her home at 140 Williams Street.

This connection has sparked an idea for Sarah's next work of art and she's 📣calling for anyone who had lessons with Katie Martin between 1930-1940 to reach out to share your story. Sarah is keen to hear from you.
