Spike the Bubble

Spike the Bubble We rent out an elegant short stay accommodation close to the warm turquoise waters of Cable Beach. W Beach House. Books. Vinyl.

Spike the Bubble Beach House is simple, elegant and it’s located in a quiet suburb, full of frangipanis, mango trees and palm trees. Better still—the house is one of the closest in Broome to the beach. It’s about a ten-minute walk through the sand dunes. Whether you’re here to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, or to experience Broome, we hope you leave feeling relaxed, energised, or i

nspired. The Beach House is the first part of our concept. Spike the Bubble was started by an avid reader and collector of vinyl, Bruce McDowall. Back in the day, Bruce was an A-grade footy player, a surfer, a model, a geographer, and a public servant who spent plenty of time on the clock writing his magnum opus: a 2000 plus page catalogue of first edition books. In 2015, Bru passed away, gifting a forty-foot shipping container full of books and vinyl to the family. We considered doing a Fahrenheit 451 and burning the lot, then changed our minds. We started Spike the Bubble Books and Vinyl. If this is your go too and you’re interested in having a look, let us know, we’d love to show you our collection! And make sure you also check us out on Instagram .the.bubble.

Some People Want to Shoot Me is now available on Audible!

Wayne paid for this important audiobook to be made so that the old people in the Kimberley—some of whom struggle with poor eyesight and the printed word—and the rest of us, many of whom are busy, and may not get time to read were it not for audiobooks, have the opportunity to take a deep dive into his complex and wondrous world.

What does it feel like to be lost in the desert with your children? How does it feel to get a death threat on Facebook while your daughter looks over your shoulder? What’s the temperature in the room when you’re squeezed between a mining company and a Premier hell-bent on making his mark on the state? You can find out, by listening in here: https://www.audible.com.au/search?keywords=some+people+want+to+shoot+me+&k=some+people+want+to+shoot+me+

Also - Spike will be back at the Broome Markets on Saturday 5th April, so you can pick up a print copy if that's more your style, then 🌺🌺🌺🌺

Last night I was having a fossick through Spike the Bubble's storage shed of books and vinyl and I hand picked a couple of ripping holiday reads to bring to the Broome Markets today. First up, I found a first edition copy of Cormac McCarthy's The Crossing. The Crossing is spare, functional and nihilistic, with booms of darkness and echoes of Spanish. An easy read from a literary master. Next up: The Mexican Tree Duck by James Crumley. This description sums up this PI crime thriller well: 'Sustained by booze and co***ne, driven by loyalty and revenge, Sughrue and his company gradually unravel the threads of s*x, drugs, oil-interests and politics that lead to a final paramilitary campaign with a high body count ...' He is so much fun. This is a beautiful hard cover version of the book, which I'll take home if it doesn't sell. Then, Popcorn, by Ben Elton, fast, racy, wild ... Maggiev MacFie is at the Broome Markets now with these and many more! As well as a big stack of excellent vinyl ...

This week Spike the Bubble Books and Music has been tailing Mary Pat Fennessy, a mother built for battle, a 20th-century version of a Fury out of Greek mythology. She's the Irish American star of Denis Lahane's Small Mercies - a woman who's happiest when she's been wronged, ecstatic when she's been opposed. When her 17-year-old daughter doesn't come home one night, Mary Pat goes on a rampage ...
This is the second Denis Lahane book we've read in a fortnight. We're addicted. Maggie is at the Broome Markets setting up now and would love to chat more!

One review in the UK's Telegraph dubbed this a 'b***y wisecracking winner' and then went on to give it only 3 stars out of 5. Are you kidding us?! This week Broome's Spike the Bubble Books and Music have been listening to the Booker-winning The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida on Audible, and for both Maggiev MacFie and I, it's a clear five stars out of five. It's set during the murderous mayhem of Sri Lanka's civil war, and is pacy, racy, and deeply darkly funny. Is it not as good as we think? Have we missed something? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below ...
Meanwhile, while Spike the Bubble was at the Broome Markets this morning, we won't be there for the next couple of Saturdays because we'll be kicking back with more good books in Bali. See you soon!

"Are you the sort of person who carries a loaded weapon to a birthday party?"
What kinda condescending bulls*** question is that? Who gon be fool enough to say yes to that? Like, Yes, ma'am, I'm so crazy I'd bring a flamethrower to a baby shower. As a gift! Now parole me or I'ma bite off your t***y ...

This weekend, Broome's Spike the Bubble Books and Music is hanging out with Carlotta, a Black Colombian Trans Woman who is the coolest, funniest character from any contemporary fiction we've read in the last decade. She stars in James Hannaham's book Ain't Nobody Give a S**t what happened to Carlotta. Maggie is at the Broome Markets now, ready to introduce you to some other cool characters from excellent books! She's also got a great collection of vinyl. Happy Saturday everyone! 🥳

This week Broome's Spike the Bubble Books and Music has ripped through a heart wrenching read by Atticus Lish called 'The War for Gloria'. Even with a toddler emptying his potty on the kitchen floor and casting fishing lures at the fan it was impossible to put this book down. Lish is famous, in a way, because his dad was Raymond Carver's editor. I studied his edits in uni - it's likely Carver wouldn't have become the writer he was, the genius in brevity, without them. In any case, Atticus Lish is bloody good. Maggie Macfie is at the Broome Markets now, not with this book for sale, but with plenty of exceptional pieces of literature and vinyl. She's also read Lish's first book, the strange and dark Preparation for the Next Life, and would love to chat about it!

This week Broome's Spike the Bubble Books and Music has been reading (and is still reading!) Bitter Bronx, a series of short stories by Jerome Charyn. How's this for an introduction?

'For a long time I couldn’t go back to the Bronx. It felt like a shriek inside my skull, or a wound that had been stitched over by some insane surgeon, and I didn’t dare undo any of the stitches. It was the land of deprivation, a world without books or libraries and museums, where fathers trundled home from some cheese counter or shoe factory where they worked, with a monumental sadness sitting on their shoulders, where mothers counted every nickel at the butcher shop, bargaining with such deep scorn on their faces that their mouths were like ribbons of raw blood, while their children, girls and boys, were instruments of disorder, stealing, biting, bullying whoever they could and whimpering when they had the least little scratch.' - Charyn

This one is not for sale (yet) but Maggiev MacFie has plenty of great book and even music (vinyl) at the Broome Markets now. Come and say g'day!

This weekend, Broome's Spike the Bubble Books and Music is deep diving into Elmore Leonard's Djibouti. Dubbed 'a Middle East western on water' it's filled with drop-dead gorgeous babes, pirates, secret CIA officials, terrorists and sailors. There are ci**rs and champagne and it's a fearless and cheeky account of the war on terror. What a great read for the weekend! Come and see Maggiev MacFie at the Broome Markets this morning for more excellent book and music recommendations for the wet and windy week ahead!

Broome's Spike the Bubble Books and Music is kicking off its wet season summer reading with Pirata by Patrick Hasburgh. Set in Mexico, it's a fast, fun, surf noir thriller, that starts with a dead body, and gets tenser with each page. The descriptions of Mex are bang on - the raindrops like pesos, the red plastic coca cola chairs, the 11am margaritas, the harrowing encounters with the 'wrong' cartel. I met and surfed with Patrick in Oaxaca earlier this year, and while he got famous writing for television, he is a brilliant writer of fiction. Maggie can point you in the direction of many more great summer reads and summer listening - she's at the Broome Markets now!

Maggie MacFie from Broome's Spike the Bubble Books and Music was really happy to catch up with our Kimberley MP Divina D'Anna last week at the markets. The two talked great Kimberley books and music! If you're keen for a read from the region, head down to the Spike the Bubble tent at the Broome Markets this morning. Beautiful photo of you two girls xx 🤓✨

27/08/2022

This week at Spike the Bubble Books and Music we are mourning the loss of 17 Kings and 42 Elephants, also pretty much all the animals from Dear Zoo, which have been torn from their cages, and the front and back cover of the Oath of Bad Brown Bill ... All victims of a bored toddler, on a backseat, on a long drive. If you need some new books, Maggie at Spike the Bubble Books and Music has you covered at the Broome Markets this morning. She's got some gorgeous kids' books from Magabala, so make sure you head down to the markets and say g'day!
