We default to typing because it's faster. New research says that speed might be costing us.
A recent Psychology Today piece rounds up the neuroscience: handwriting lights up motor, language, and attention systems in ways typing doesn't. One study found handwritten notes led to better recall and deeper understanding than typed ones, because writing by hand forces you to process information instead of just transcribing it.
Here's the part we think about a lot: that research is about individuals. But the same mechanism applies to a room.
