When cornered, it opens its wings and becomes something else entirely.
Meet Idolomantis diabolica. The Giant Devil's Flower Mantis.
Idolomantis diabolica is native to East Africa. Females reach up to 13 cm (5 in), making this one of the largest mantis species on the planet.
At rest, it disappears. The lobes on its legs and body mimic dry, dying vegetation. Not flowers. Dead plant matter. Predators walk past it.
When that fails, the strategy switches completely. It raises its forelegs, spreads its wings, and exposes a sudden flash of blue, red, and white. The display is called deimatic behavior. It exists purely to startle. One second of hesitation is enough.
The species name diabolica refers to that moment.
In the exotic insect hobby, this species is known as the holy grail. It is also one of the hardest to keep alive in captivity. Specific humidity, specific temperature, live flying prey only. Most attempts fail.
In the wild, none of that is a problem.
