I’ve been in touch with a Sheffield tool maker that produces gouges. I’m looking for Excalibur, well my Excalibur anyway, a two handed heavy bladed number three sweep gouge for doing the initial carving on tops and backs of violin.s They’ve promised to get back to me so we’ll see.

The linings, usually made of spruce or willow, provide a larger gluing surface for the back and top to glue to the ribs. They are bent using a hot bending iron and glued carefully. Held in place by state of the art clothes pegs!

With violin exams done, and Music Camp done and dusted, time to get back to the bench. Ribs for number five.
