NGSFC Redfin & Crab Round-Up
Proudly sponsored by Razor Edge Lures

The NGSFC Redfin & Crab Round-Up is back, and this year we're trying something a little different with the Redfin Perch competition. We're excited to introduce a new format and can't wait to see how it unfolds.

Designed to kick off another great fishing season, this event is all about bringing members, families, and newcomers together for a relaxed and enjoyable weekend on the water. Whether you're chasing Redfin Perch, dropping nets for crabs, or simply looking to enjoy the outdoors, there's something for everyone.

Redfin Perch Competition

The Redfin Perch competition is open to anglers of all ages and will feature the following categories:

Heaviest Redfin Perch
Senior – 1st & 2nd
Junior – 1st & 2nd
Sub-Junior – 1st & 2nd
Additional Prize Categories
Most Fish by Weight
Mystery Weight Prize

A key feature of this year's event is that there are no competition boundaries for the Redfin Perch competition. Competitors are free to fish any legal freshwater location of their choice, giving everyone the opportunity to fish their favourite Redfin Perch waters.

All competitors must comply with the current DPIRD recreational fishing regulations when targeting Redfin Perch.

As Redfin Perch are a declared pest species in Western Australia, they must not be returned to the water once caught. Competitors are encouraged to humanely euthanise and dispose of all Redfin Perch captured in accordance with DPIRD recommendations.

For more information on current recreational fishing rules and pest fish management, please visit the DPIRD website.

Crab Competition

The crab competition will feature a Heaviest Bag of 5 Crabs category. The final competition structure is still to be confirmed and may either be split into Senior, Junior and Sub-Junior divisions or run as a single Open Category.

Additional proposed prize categories include:

Longest Span Crab (Open)
Mystery Weight (Open)

All crabbing activities must be conducted within the club's standard competition boundaries and in accordance with current DPIRD recreational fishing regulations.

Thanks to the generous support of Razor Edge Lures, competitors will be in the running for a fantastic range of prizes, including:

Not exactly lure related but behind the scenes at Razor Edge I’ve been building my 1975 Mini engine with a bit of a twist. Just mocked up how she will look with a supercharger strapped to the back of her. Still a fair way to go but finally able to see roughly how she will look. 😉 (ignore the difference in colour of head to block. There is a new head on the way…)

Sunset Redfin. A beautiful time of the arvo to sneak out for a quick fish. This chunk putting the X-Stream to the test having to pole it up the bank over some structure. The lure of choice was a Candy Purple Swimson landing 8 fish in the 40 minute adventure.

Always an interesting time when you cast off a 2m bank with no expectation that there will be a fish. Then having to climb down the mud bank to try land it between the logs. That’s where the X-Stream comes into its own. Small and agile yet strong enough to hold its own against some solid fish.

There’s something about this particular system and a Bloodworm colour plastic. This time was the Grubson. Testing an area I don’t usually fish this guy came up from the bank and smoked it followed by another 3 Reddies. Rigged SnagLess as usual 👌🏼

When you catch a pest fish, don't throw it back 🐟🐠 The latest South West Freshwater Angling Survey shows one in five redfin perch caught in 2024/25 was released, despite the fish being a threat to other species in the waterway.

Department of Fisheries Management Officer Aaron Moses said he would like to see fishers play a bigger role removing redfin perch from our dams and rivers.

"They're actually great to eat," he said

"Even if you don't want to eat them, please humanely dispatch them and dispose of them appropriately and you'll be doing a lot of good for our marron which is an iconic species in the South West."

The data showed redfin perch made up about 77% of the total freshwater catch.
