uires have been collecting animals for display since 1964 when they purchased the Cairns Baths and converted them to an oceanarium and displayed the animals of the Great Barrier Reef to the public for the first time. Today, the company operates three fully customised 22m vessels collecting under strict licensing and fisheries management conditions from the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea. Specimens are kept at our custom built holding and husbandry facility in Cairns, Mackay and Darwin which are distributed across Australia and around the world.

🪸 Fresh from the Great Barrier Reef – Mackay Collection 🇦🇺

Collected this week from the pristine reefs of Mackay, these stunning Acanthastrea lordhowensis showcase the incredible colour and diversity found on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Every coral is carefully hand collected by our experienced team, ensuring minimal impact on the surrounding reef while maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare. Through strict government quotas, scientific management, and responsible collection practices, Australia's coral fishery continues to demonstrate that sustainable use and reef conservation can work hand in hand.

🐟 THE GRAND REVEAL 🐟

This week’s Super Fish Nerd Challenge was the Bluelined Surgeonfish, Acanthurus lineatus, also known as the Lined Surgeonfish or Clown Tang.

🥇 First correct answer: Kai (no surprises)
🥈 Second correct answer: Seth Ward

The tail was the giveaway: a dark caudal fin, broad pale crescent and bright edging.

And what an animal it is. Acanthurus lineatus is one of the most extraordinary and beautiful surgeonfish, with vivid blue and yellow lines across the head and upper body, a pale underside and orange-yellow fins.

We do not have them often and generally only receive a small number. They are also not a fish for everyone.

Acanthurus lineatus can reach about 38 cm total length. It is a powerful, active and strongly territorial algal grazer that naturally occupies shallow, wave-exposed reef habitat.

In aquaria, it needs a genuinely large, mature system with strong water movement, excellent oxygenation, plenty of swimming room, continual access to suitable algal foods and carefully chosen tank mates. It is not a sensible surgeonfish for the average reef aquarium, but in the right system it is an absolutely magnificent display animal.

It is a good reminder that choosing a fish should be about far more than colour. Adult size, natural behaviour, feeding ecology and the aquarium available all matter.

Well done to everyone who picked it from the tail alone, especially our first two fish nerds this week.

🐟 SUPER FISH NERD CHALLENGE 🐟

Another easy one this week… or at least it should be for the regulars.

We have cropped right in on the tail, but there is more than enough there for a proper fish nerd to work with. Have a good look at the shape, pattern and colour. This is a very distinctive fish once you know what you are looking at.

Common and scientific name please.

And before we get started… where was Lemon last week? Noticeably absent when the bragging rights were being handed out. We expect a return to form this week, Lemon!

🐟 GRAND REVEAL — WEEKLY SUPER FISH NERD CHALLENGE 🐟

The mystery stripes belonged to the pelvic fin of an Emperor Angelfish, Pomacanthus imperator. Congratulations to Nguyễn Nam Phương, who was first to nail it, along with our regular Sam Shepard not far behind — excellent work from some seriously sharp fish nerds. Watch the attached clip for the full reveal, and we will be back next Wednesday at 6 pm Cairns time with another challenge. Enjoy the bragging rights while they last!

🐟 THE WEEKLY SUPER FISH NERD CHALLENGE IS BACK! 🦈

Think you know your marine life? Here is another chance to prove it.

As always, there is no cash prize, no trophy and definitely no new boat. The reward is far more valuable: recognition from your fellow fish nerds, full bragging rights and the warm satisfaction of knowing that your hours spent staring into aquariums, scrolling through fish photos and memorising scientific names have finally paid off.

There has been a little criticism that some of our previous challenges have been too hard. This one is easier, but let’s be honest — there is no real reward if it isn’t at least a little bit difficult. If it was easy, you wouldn’t be a Super Fish Nerd. You would just be an average fish nerd, right?

The rules moving forward: The Weekly Super Fish Nerd Challenge will be posted every Wednesday at 6 pm Cairns time. Put your guess in the comments, and the grand reveal will follow at 6 pm the next day. The first person to correctly identify the animal wins the official accolades, but everyone else who gets it right can still quietly enjoy knowing they are pretty bloody good too — so it is always worth putting your answer down. The mystery animal could be a fish, shark, ray or any kind of marine invertebrate, and we will introduce corals into the mix at some stage as well. Scientific names are encouraged where you know them, educated guesses are welcome, and yes… Lemon is allowed to participate.
