We have just received a new collection of Natural Urushi Lacquer Brooches.
Urushi is made from the refined sap of the lacquer tree and traditionally applied to wooden pieces. Once cured, it becomes remarkably strong and durable, developing a beautiful, deep lustre that can last for many years.
These brooches are made using traditional urushi techniques, but with a modern and playful approach to design.
Lightweight and understated, they have the unique warmth and feel that only natural urushi can offer — each one is a lovely little piece of craftsmanship✨

Recently, Japanese curry and seaweed seem to be having a bit of a moment here in Canberra. For me, though, they will always be some of the most ordinary and comforting foods of home.
We might go out for sushi or ramen, but curry rice (カレーライス) is something we make at home and eat around the family table — perhaps one of Japan’s true soul foods. I’ve lost count of how many pots of curry I made over the years to fill the hungry stomachs of our three children!
And then there is this sushi. This is what I bring home on those lovely days when I don’t have to cook for anyone. The generous amount of vegetables and those beautiful thick slices of salmon always make me very happy ✨

If you like our multi-layer Kaya (mosquito-net fabric) Kitchen Cloths, you might like these tea towels too✨💙
At 58 × 58 cm, they’re much larger and made with fewer layers, so they’re light, absorbent and dry incredibly quickly — no more damp tea towels hanging around in the kitchen!
At home, I use the darker colours for drying hands and the lighter ones for dishes, and I’m loving them. They dry so quickly and always feel fresh.
Perfect for drying dishes, wiping hands, straining food or even wrapping things✨

This is how happy I am to be wearing our new hand-dyed silk dress!
Featuring graceful cranes and wildflowers, it’s beautiful from every angle, with adjustable side ties for a flattering, inclusive fit.
Sumi is wearing our new Kasuri Patchwork Blouse, while we’ve also added a Shibori-dyed Silk Tunic with a matching scarf and a repurposed Kendo gear jacket with the original “Fuji High School” lettering on the sleeve.
Every piece is one of a kind and full of character✨

I love the mug, the soup mug, and the teacup... actually, I love every single piece.

They have the warmth and character that only handmade pottery can offer. The texture feels beautiful in your hands, and the turquoise glaze is absolutely stunning. I can even imagine these pieces looking gorgeous with kintsugi one day if I ever happened to break one. ✨

The matching teapots are just as beautiful, but unfortunately they arrived without their brass handles! 😂

I’ll share them properly once the handles arrive.

There’s something special about opening a parcel that has travelled all the way from Okinawa, Japan’s southernmost prefecture.
Senju (千壽)’s beautiful Kintsugi earrings have just arrived, and I’m so happy to share them with you.
Each pair is handcrafted by Ms. Fuchi using sea ceramics, sea tiles, antique and contemporary ceramics, and natural gemstones. No two pairs are ever the same.
The two pairs in the third photo are actually mine—I wear them almost every week, alternating between the two.
Kintsugi is the traditional Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer and gold. Rather than hiding cracks, it celebrates their history and the beauty of imperfection.
I hope you’ll find a pair that speaks to you, too.✨

“If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?”

For the longest time, I thought this beautiful line—「冬来たりなば春遠からじ」—was a Japanese saying. I only recently learned that it comes from a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley.

On a grey, frosty morning, our dog wandered past a quiet sign of spring beneath the pale gum trees—a splash of golden wattle. ✨
