When suggested we cut some hearts into her guitar, my first thought was, “F**k yes, we can!”

My second thought was, “Where am I gonna put these flippin’ hearts?!”

I couldn’t just cut them willy-nilly — they needed to make sense, at least to me! So, one day, I was teaching my Year 6 students maths using playing cards, and the 3 of hearts popped up: two up and one down. I loved it — odd and unbalanced, but with reference to something as ubiquitous as playing cards.

Now, where do I put these hearts?

They are in the mirrored position and hole size of the k***s — 10mm — and switch — 13mm.

There’s nothing random on my guitars — everything is designed in direct relationship to another part of the instrument. Balance is all.

Sadie has new tunes out this week: “1331” — there’s that balance again. They’re awesome. Look her up.
