Handweavers and Spinners Guild of Victoria Our aim is to keep alive the ancient crafts of spinning, weaving, dyeing and allied crafts All Ashford equipment can also be bought through the craft outlet.

The Guild seeks to help and encourage their members to increase their knowledge, understanding and skills in these crafts through discussion, demonstration, exhibition, teaching and the provision of resource materials. Our premises at 655 Nicholson St, Carlton North are open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 3pm. You can contact the guild on +61 3 9387 9222 or by email at [email protected]

We have a wonderful gallery filled with items hand-crafted by guild members. Our craft outlet stocks a very broad range of supplies, including fleeces, fibres, books, dyes and equipment. Our library of over 2000 items is an incredible resource for the use of members. The exhibition space is available to groups and individuals interested in showcasing their skills. Membership of the guild gives many benefits, including our monthly newsletter, Treadles, access to borrowing from the library, discounts on classes, workshops and courses, access to the gallery for sale of articles and skeins and the opportunity to interact with like-minded inspirational people. If you would like to join the guild, just ring or visit during opening hours, or go to the website for an application form

HWSGV's Annual General Meeting is tomorrow, and we would like to see as many members as possible in attendance. Please come along and participate in the administration and discussion of your Guild. A shared lunch will be held directly after the meeting closes, so also bring a plate to share afterwards.

If you can't make it in person, we will be streaming the meeting via Zoom. The details for Zoom are in the September 2026 Treadles at the top on the 1st page. See you there!

Shout out - it’s also Spin in Public Day so please feel free to bring your wheels and spin with us after the meeting!

Join teacher Jay Peterson for this class on spinning one of those fibres we all find so very challenging - Cotton! You will be spining cotton from bolls, punis, and sliver (materials supplied).

Students need to have experience spinning other fibres such as wool. They will need to bring their wheel (needs to have a ratio 12-1 or higher), cotton carders or at least the finest wool carders that you have, and a dowel stick 5mm at least 5 cm longer than the carders.

Let experienced spinner Cheryl take you through a session of drafting technique demonstrations and hands-on practice showing alternate methods of drafting to get the results you're looking for with your hand-spun yarns.

Cheryl will be covering English Long draw with rolags, Rocking, Roll back for even, smooth yarns, two techniques for spinning very fine Merino and from-the-fold drafting for longer fibres.

This class is perfect for those who have a solid foundation and are ready to start expanding their skillset. Students need to bring their own wheel and bobbin, and it would be appreciated if those who have them bring their own flickers and carders.

Get in soon to learn to weave 3-dimensional pleats with simple 8 shaft twills in this incredible class taght by Amanda Ho.

This intermediate class is appropriate for weavers that are able to weave 1/3 or 3/1 twill on 4 shafts and can read a weaving draft. Students are required to bring their own 8 shaft loom (or to hire one from the guild) and to do some warp prep in advance so book soon.

Warping plan and yarn requirements will be emailed to students 3 weeks before class.

The Guild is pleased to have welcomed a new exhibition that showcases the work of
the Weave Study Group. The exhibit highlights works - both finished and samples - produced since the group was formed four years ago. In that time, the group has looked into a variety of different weave structures. A sneak peek can be seen in the photos above.

It is exciting to see what our talented experienced and new weavers have been
up to and to understand the learning that is gained when a weave structure or technique is studied in detail.

We’re trying something new at the Guild! We’ve had a very popular natural dyeing group for many years at the Guild, and now you can learn the basics in one action-packed, hands-on weekend! Tips and tricks for mordanting, how to prepare your textiles for dyeing (and what happens if you don’t). How to navigate which dyes to buy and where from. Hints on foraging for dyes from your local environment and pointers towards how to approach dyeing with what you find (hint, flowers and bark need very different approaches!).

To ensure everyone in the class has the same experience, we’re using a standard wool (locally grown and processed non-superwash merino), so there will be a little homework, which is for you to wind some miniskeins prior to class (great practice if you decide to come to our dye group at some time in the future). The wool can be picked up from the guild or mailed to you, and all instructions will be sent to you with the wool.

Our first class up for the Spring Fling is a fab refresher for weavers of all levels. Amanda Ho will be hosting A Refresher for Dressing Your Loom on the 2nd October.

This 4.5hr masterclass will take you through various techniques (and variations) such as:
• How to wind a warp on a vertical and horizontal warping mill
• How to dress the floor/table loom on your own
• How to dress the loom without a raddle
• How to dress the loom with more than one warp
