The 'Toys Change Lives' Program assists Indigenous youth to break the cycle of re-offending & imprisonment via pathways of woodwork and Indigenous art training.

The cycle of youth recidivism occurs when a young person becomes involved in the criminal justice system, and continues to become involved with criminal activities after being released. The cycle can often only be broken through the provision of support and guidance, as well as positive role models, for the young person.

Through our program, we help Indigenous youth to develop employability skills, gain valuable work experience, and create connections with mentors from their own communities. Toys Change Lives is committed to creating meaningful, lasting change in the lives of Indigenous youth and helping them to build a brighter future.

Mentors at Toys Change Lives are making a real difference in the lives of Indigenous youth and proving that with the right support, anything is possible.

Our mentors provide life-changing guidance and assistance to youth in their communities, helping them to learn new skills, find employment, and access support resources. This approach is not only providing meaningful employment to Indigenous youth, but is also helping to break the cycle of crime and poverty by providing an alternative path for these young people.

The TCL Program has been shown to be highly effective in reducing the amount of time that children spend in detention.

In the four years of operating the TCL program, 22 of the 24 program participants sourced from ACMENA have remained out of detention. This is a significant saving to the Australian public, estimated at up to $8,960,000 annually.

The TCL program offers a unique and much needed service to the community, and its success speaks for itself. With such a proven track record, there is no doubt that the TCL Program is an important and valuable resource for Australia.

Toys Change Lives is a unique program that provides opportunities for disadvantaged youth to get back on their feet. We work intensively with participants to build confidence and self-esteem, and use other service providers to deliver specialised services.

Our outcomes are achieved by developing a culture of respect and self-responsibility for our participants. Once they see the real opportunity of community engagement that employment and cultural reconnection provides them, they rarely reoffend. This is how we achieve our mission of stopping the cycle of disadvantage and re-incarceration.
