‘All the artworks in the book were made by Ned Sevil who died from cancer in 2010. Ned’s artworks have been collaboratively put together by Ned’s brother Tom Sevil (aka Civil), his mother Chris Mason and his sister-in-law Lou Smith, who collectively make up the ‘Tent Pegs’.
Lou Smith wrote the story based around the illustrations.
It has been made with love to celebrate the beautiful, playful spirit that was Ned, and to share the collection of artworks he has left behind.
This is a gentle, fable-like story about courage and determination that will speak to readers about friendship, imagination and life’s journey. Follow along with the child in the story who seeks advice from friends. True to the fable form, there is a whimsical quality about this story with a main protagonist who is sweet and fey yet determined in their quest To Fly Up High in the Big Blue Sky.
Children will enjoy the many characters we meet along the way, all the while getting closer to fulfilling the journey. And for those readers who are happy and ready to talk about more complex themes, it is the perfect springboard for discussing the notion of death.’ - Christine Mason

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year, to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

On the second last day of NAIDOC week we’d like to express our gratitude to all the incredible First Nations authors, artists and truth tellers for sharing their knowledge and creativity through books and to give a big shout out to everyone who bought a book by a First Nations author this week to learn more together and experience a richer connection to this land and people.
