🐬🐚 Well, this put a smile on my dial! 😁🩵

Researchers have filmed bottlenose dolphins in the Great Sandy Marine Park near Hervey Bay, Queensland, using empty seashells to catch their dinner!

They encourage a fish into a shell, carry the shell to the surface and then tip the fish straight into their mouths—nature’s own little takeaway container! 😂🐟

But this is the part that really touched my heart…

A mother dolphin and her calf were both seen doing the clever shell trick. Researchers believe the little one may have been learning by watching Mum. 🥹🩵

The footage was captured between July and October 2025, with the research published in 2026. It is the first published scientific record of this behaviour on Australia’s east coast. 🇦🇺✨

What a beautiful reminder that there is still so much happening beneath the waves that we are only just beginning to understand. Our Australian wildlife really is remarkable. 🫂🐬

🩵🦦 THE BREATH OF LIFE 🦦🩵

Sometimes it really does take a village—even for an otter. 🫂

On 28 July 2026, people in Alert Bay, British Columbia, heard cries coming from near a marina dock. At first, they thought the sounds might be children.

Instead, they discovered three tiny river-otter pups tangled in discarded fishing netting.

Two were freed and quickly returned to the water, where their mother was waiting nearby. But the third little pup wasn’t moving. The net had tightened around its neck and stopped it from breathing.

Retired commercial fisherman Gordon Mellish cut the pup free and gently tried chest compressions. When there was still no response, he placed his mouth over its tiny nose and mouth and gave it what he called a “breath of life.”

And that little otter began breathing again. 🥹🦦

But the kindness didn’t stop there.

Local woman Robin Quirk made the recovering pup a shaded place to rest, stayed with it overnight and then travelled by car and ferry to get it to a wildlife rehabilitation centre.

For one week, the pup rested and received specialist care.

Then came the moment everyone had hoped for.

The little survivor was brought back to Alert Bay and released into the water. Gordon and Robin watched as it swam away—and later sightings confirmed that the pup had found its mother and siblings again. 🩵🫂🩵

Gordon explained why he tried so hard to save such a tiny life:

“A life’s a life, no matter what it is.”

I love the truth held inside those simple words.

This little otter survived because somebody noticed, somebody stopped, somebody breathed life back into it, somebody provided comfort and somebody completed the journey home.

It also leaves us with a quiet reminder: discarded fishing line and netting can become deadly traps. Karlu Karlu Conservation Reserve in the Northern Territory has officially been recognised as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary—making it the first in the Northern Territory and only the third in Australia.

Located around 100 kilometres south of Tennant Creek, Karlu Karlu is known for its enormous ancient granite boulders resting across the wide Barkly landscape.

But when the sun disappears, another kind of wonder reveals itself.

With no permanent artificial lighting at the reserve or nearby, the Milky Way, planets and constellations remain visible across the night sky in a way many people may never have experienced.

This recognition is not simply an award for beautiful stargazing. It includes a commitment to responsible lighting and protecting the natural darkness—something that matters for nocturnal wildlife, the environment, cultural connections and future generations.

The 1,800-hectare reserve supports approximately 116 native plant species, 83 bird species, 10 native mammal species, 30 reptile species, four frog species and even a drought-surviving crab species. 🦀✨️

Karlu Karlu also holds deep cultural significance for the Kaytetye, Warumungu, Warlpiri and Alyawarra Traditional Owners, whose support helped make this recognition possible.

In a world where artificial light continues to spread, Australia has made a commitment to keep this extraordinary piece of country beautifully and naturally dark.
