Project spotlight: Fiord Chevron Parquetry.

Chevron creates a strong line through a room. Each angled piece meets at a point, forming a continuous V that gives the floor an architectural sense of direction.

In a finished project, the pattern needs space to read clearly. The main sightline, centre point, doorways and perimeter cuts all influence whether the result feels balanced.

This is also why the widest project image matters. A close-up shows craftsmanship, but the full room view shows how the pattern works with the architecture, furniture and natural light.

Where genuine, before photography is available, show the transformation. Where it is not, let the finished project stand on its own and focus on the layout decisions behind it.

Herringbone or Chevron: What Is the Difference?

Herringbone or chevron? They create a different rhythm, even when the timber colour is similar.

Herringbone uses rectangular pieces arranged so the end of one meets the side of another. The result is a broken zigzag with a classic, layered feel.

Chevron uses pieces cut on an angle so the ends meet in a continuous point. That creates a cleaner V shape and a more directional line through the room.

The decision is not only about which pattern you prefer on a sample board. Room proportions, doorways, the starting line, borders and the way the pattern meets adjoining spaces all affect the finished result.

A strong layout should feel centred and intentional from the main viewing position, not simply fitted into whatever space remains at the edges.

Prefer an oak floor with a quieter, more consistent appearance? An AB grade may be worth exploring.

In general, AB grade timber is selected for a cleaner visual presentation, with fewer prominent knots and less dramatic variation than more character-led grades. It still looks like real timber, so grain and natural differences remain part of the floor.

This can work beautifully in minimal interiors, refined apartments and spaces where cabinetry, stone or furniture already carry a lot of visual detail.

It is not automatically “better” than a rustic or reclaimed grade. It is simply a different design choice. Some homes benefit from a calm, restrained floor; others come alive with knots, texture and stronger colour movement.

The most useful comparison is several full boards from each grade, viewed together in your own light.

Project spotlight: Beaumont Oak.

This floor brings together natural grey and mocha tones with soft chalky nuances, creating a foundation that feels contemporary without becoming cold.

The textured, hand-scraped surface adds visible character when the light moves across the boards. In a finished room, that texture can help the floor feel layered and natural rather than flat or overly uniform.

For a colour like this, the wider design picture matters. We would compare it with cabinetry, stone, wall colour and window light, then view several full boards together so the balance of grey, brown and natural variation is clear.

The strongest flooring choices often sit quietly underneath the room while still giving every other finish something to connect with.

What does the wear layer mean on an engineered timber floor?

It is the genuine timber surface above the layered core. Its thickness can affect how much timber is available for future professional refinishing, but it should not be judged in isolation.

Board construction, surface finish, manufacturing quality, installation, subfloor preparation and everyday care all influence how a floor performs. A thicker wear layer does not make a floor scratch-proof, and two boards with the same nominal thickness can still look and behave differently.

When comparing options, ask to see the full specification for the exact product. Look at the timber grade, texture, coating, plank dimensions, and recommended installation system, then consider whether those details suit the way the room will be used.

The best question is not simply “Which board has the biggest number?” It is “Which complete product is the right fit for this project?”
