Forgot to do a follow up on that bassoon from last mo th with the dodgy d post repair

We removed the mess
Grafted some fresh maple in
Shaved the maple to height
Tested out colours and painted the patch
Drilled the patch for new post
Fitted post and regulated the key

Couple of fifes in for new headcorks, but how far back do you push the cork inside the mouth pipe tubing

How’s it done

We start with the mouth pipe, then we use gauge plugs to find the inner bore size, then we machine a piece of brass as a guide stick to indicate that distance and then we push the cork into place using that guide stick, then we test play the fife using its octaves to tune the position

When you get instruments in with large sections of dirty coloured brass it’s typically because some dent work has been done in the past and the follow up buffing and or lacquering was not carried out

I typically as part of the service rebuff this area and spray some lacquer to stop it corroding, this frenchie is a classic example of the problem

This one is now rebuffed and lacquered, can assemble it next week when it’s dry

Workspace equals time saved which equals faster turn around times

When you store a tool away, it takes time to set it up and use it, so it slows a job right down, the more tools permanently setup the faster work production.

Here are three mandrels for reshaping horn bells, French horn, trombone trumpet, these are the main 3 I use every day, permanently setup so it takes minutes to smooth dents rather than hrs

At the end of the work day, I drop cloths over the top to minimise any flash rusting

My first sax was a bundy 2 which I learnt to play on.

So kind of soft spot for them when they come in, this one is in for a full repad

I strip it down approximately 4 times during the process.

This is strip down no 2, I have rough floated all the pads and now scraping the glue that has squeezed out from behind the cups off

Put it back together now and start doing regulations and fine tweaking of keys

Tools of the trade

To remove dents from tubing we pull small dent balls through to raise the dent up from underneath and then with a hammer we tap it down, back and forth until the surface is smooth again

This leadpipe is a classic example of the process, not a fast process, this leadpipe took close to two hrs to finish off

We have lots of dents in the pipe
We draw balls though to raise the dents up
Planish the dents down with a hammer
Dents erased, now move onto the bell crook dents
