💥 Tune in Tuesday… with… Redlegged earth mites
Redlegged earth mites have been heavily impacting pastures and crops over recent weeks and should be monitored closely.
Redlegged earth mites are a common pest of pastures and broadacre crops, distinguished by their eight red-orange legs and small black bodies, measuring approximately 1 mm in length.
They hatch in autumn following cooler weather and rainfall events and have a lifecycle of approximately 4–6 weeks before laying further eggs.
Damage is often first noticed in clover, where leaves develop a silvering or whitening appearance. White “tipping” on ryegrass leaves can also indicate mite damage, although frost damage can produce similar symptoms.
Biological and chemical control methods are both commonly used, depending on pest pressure and individual farm circumstances.
