About the book!

When Daphne notices an older gentleman following her around the Met museum in New York, she doesn’t expect it to be Eddie - her former stepfather. Married to her mother for a short time when Daphne was nine, she hasn’t seen Eddie for many years; not since the fateful event that changed the direction of both their lives.

But meeting again now, time falls away; while their relationship was brief, it had a profound impact on them both. And reflecting on the short, intense time they spent with each other, they begin to piece together the moments that have defined them and shaped who they have become.

A moving, luminous story about how family, memory, and love endures, Whistler paints an intimate portrait of how the feeling of being known by one other person, even for a short period of time, can change everything.

We were incredibly fortunate to have Danielle Binks Melbourne-based writer and literary agent visit the bookstore twice in the last few weeks and sign our books!

I was also lucky to have Danielle Binks proofread and edit my ‘Reading Passport’ which will hopefully be available soon (aiming for a book week release!)!

During her visits we unknowingly wore matching T-Shirts too!

Thank you for visiting our store twice in the last few weeks, signing our book’s and for the yummy lollies!

Signed copies of Danielle’s new book is available in-store. We also have signed copies of her bestselling middle-grade book ‘The Year the Maps Changed’, which is currently on the Coburg High reading list.

‘Shakespeare in the Orchard’ her latest release is a coming-of-age story inspired by true events in Australia in World War I that explores the things that separate us and those that bring us together.

Langwarrin, Victoria, 1914. The whole world is at war. In Langwarrin on the Mornington Peninsula, fourteen-year-old Jack Thorning is the best marksman in military cadet training. His brother, Matt, taught him everything he knew, after their father died. But now Matt has joined the war effort, and it’s up to Jack to hold down the home front and help his mother run the family orchard.

When a group of ‘enemy aliens’ are sent to Langwarrin to be held prisoner at the Military base, tensions in the town run high. For Jack and his best friend, Walter, the war feels closer than ever.

Like the rest of the town, Jack and Walter want nothing to do with the German prisoners. But as the war progresses, the inmates at the camp are put to work doing manual labour on the farms around Langwarrin, including Jack’s family orchard, and Jack begins to see that the prisoners are people, too.

What could Jack possibly have in common with the people responsible for keeping his beloved brother at war? And can Shakespeare bring them all together?

Thank you for visiting our little bookstore in Coburg this afternoon! It was so lovely to meet you, I admire the work that you do, your bravery, strength and resilience.
I’ve just started reading ‘Women Who Win - Celebrating Courage, Conviction and Change’ published by 6 signed copies are available in-store.

Journalist and human rights advocate Antoinette Lattouf takes us on a gripping journey through women who defied expectations and shattered cultural and legal barriers – usually while being cast aside and asked to calm down.

In these pages you’ll meet:

- Australia’s first female law graduate
- First Nations leaders who resisted colonisation
- Pioneers in sport and science
- The women behind the first s*x discrimination class action
- Those fighting against climate destruction.

Some names you’ll recognise, others you’ll wish you’d known sooner.

Threaded throughout is Lattouf’s landmark victory – one woman, armed with ethical resolve, taking on Australia’s most powerful media institution. In doing so, she sparked a global conversation on power, prejudice and the price of integrity in the press.

Women Who Win is a fierce, unflinching celebration of grit, guts and glorious defiance. These women didn’t just show up – they came to rewrite the rules and never asked for permission.

Less history lesson, more history’s mic drop – and now the stage is yours.

Armed with the legacies of those who came before us, what fight will you take on? What victories are within your reach today?
