Pyney’s 🥧 Reviews
The Aussie Bakehouse
(Legian Bali)

The last 4 months has been absolutely crazy, so I decided to do a quick trip to Bali to have a few Bintang’s plus search for a few 🇦🇺 🥧 joints in and around the Kuta/Legian area.

On our first day of our arrival I was out doing a morning walk when an absolute legend named Adam bailed be up for a yarn. Adam has been a long time follower of the page and now lives in Bali. He gave me a few tips and told me to visit this place called The Aussie Bakehouse.

The Aussie Bakehouse is located about 50 or so metres down the road from the famous Y-Bar in Legian. It’s owned and operated on Aussie legend named Steve, who’s had this place for a few years. Steve’s originally from Mildura VIC and started his trade there many years ago. The baking trade has taken him all over the country and when the opportunity came up to open this shop in Bali he jumped at it.

Now opening up a bakery in Bali might sound easy
and exciting, but the process has been extremely difficult. Getting the equipment like 🥧 tins, dough sheeters and rotal ovens has had it’s challenges. Once you’ve got the equipment sorted getting quality ingredients to put into the products was next hurdle. Most of these ingredients come offshore and as you can imagine this process is not a cheap.

The shop itself is quite small, but offers a terrific selection of 🇦🇺 bakery products. 🥧’s sausage rolls, pasties, chocolate eclairs, vanilla slices, croissants, and Steve’s famous bread that can be found at a number of wholesale outlets around Bali are all here. What makes the story even better, is that Steve has trained a number of Balinese ladies the art of baking and almost every item now baked in the shop is the ladies handiwork. This takes time and Steve has certainly done that and the products on display looked great.

Steve and the ladies have created a great little menu that includes all your 🇦🇺 bakery favourites. I decided to try a few 🥧’s, but for the purpose of this review, I went with the shops new “Chunky Steak 🥧” As you know this is one of my favourite flavours and I couldn’t wait to get started on this one.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money - 55,000K 🇮🇩 or $4.50 🇦🇺 was ridiculous value considering the 🥧 weighed around 265 grams. A very decent size in both depth and diameter which was pretty awesome. Overall, it doesn’t get much better than this, in my opinion, it’s too cheap. 10/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio - Pics may be a little deceiving, but there was a decent number of meat chunks in this 🥧. 8/10

3. Flavour - The flavour was really nice. The meat chunks were fairly decent in size and scattered throughout the 🥧. The dark gravy sauce was really nice and complimented the meat beautifully. Nothing fancy just a really good chunky steak flavourer 🥧 8/10

4. Pastry - The first thing I noticed was the colour of his 🥧’s and gee wizz they all looked amazing. The girls have also done a fantastic job on the shape, shrinkage stability, all 3 aspects couldn’t be faulted. The top bake and it’s thickness wasn’t that far away, plus it tasted great as well. The bottom bake was too thick and had a very small wet line, this is a really easy fix. A couple of minor points to work on, but overall the girls have done a good job on this pastry 8/10

5. Serving Temperature - Perfect temp !!! 10/10

🥧🥧 44/50 🥧🥧

Well done ladies, you have all done an outstanding job with this 🥧 and all the 🥧’s i sampled. The work you have done on the pastry really surprise me in particular the shrinkage, colour and stability. It can take years to learn this part of the pastry process and these girls have absolutely nailed it. The scores across the five categories were extremely consistent, but for me the price point was the stand out 55k or $4.50 on the current exchange rate is insanely priced. Well done girls this product and all the products I sampled were all of a high standard.

If you’re traveling to Bali and you love your meat 🥧’s this place is a must visit. Apart from the 🥧’s the other products tasted fantasic. Open 7 days a week, get in early to avoid disappointment.

Steve thank you so much for getting back to me and allowing me to share your incredible 🥧 journey. What you have created here in Bali is very special. What’s also special is the knowledge and expertise you have passed on to your staff. You have a awesome little team producing awesome products. To be able to come to Bali and grab a quality product like the ones in your bakery is pretty cool. Keep up the awesome work mate and thanks for the not so awesome hangover.

For all those who are travelling to Bali we stayed 3 nights at the Stones Marriott in Legian. Wonderful hotel, exceptionally clean, awesome pool and breakfast was sensational. The other 4 nights at the Lalasa Villias up at Changgu. Our private villia is stunning, the whole complex is beautiful. Both places are very different and both highly recommended.

Back to the 🇦🇺 reviews next week and first up will be Pastry Creations Bakery in Maryborough is next on the list followed up by the Pomona Bakery. Both visits were sensational so keep a eye out for these.

As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.

Rod & Gabi have been on a very delicious mission lately… hunting down Canberra’s best pie. And let’s just say the votes have been rolling in faster than a hot pastry on a cold morning.

But here’s the twist! There’s one bloke who didn’t need a vote at all!

Shaun “Pyney” Pyne has already tasted every pie in the Capital… and every pie in Australia. Yep. All of them… The man is basically pastry-powered at this point!

And his verdict on Canberra’s best? Let’s just say it surprised even Rod & Gabi…

The full chat and Pyney’s top pick is waiting for you on the website. Go have a listen before your next pie run!

Pyney’s 🥧 Reviews
Gin Gin Bakery
(Gin Gin QLD)

As we made our way down the Bruce Hwy we decided to park up for the night at the Gin Gin rest area. We pumped out a huge day driving and the next morning I’d arranged to visit one of qld’s best bakeries.

The Gin Gin Bakery was actually the 6th review I ever did back in March 2020. So I thought it time to head back see the team and update the review that sits on my 🥧 map. Gin Gin is a historic rural town in located about 370km northwest of Brisbane. The bakery itself is right in the centre of town and is owned and operated by Maree, her son Robert and his partner Kristy.

The bakery has been there for quite some time, but over the last few years has undergone huge changes. Since my last visit the crew have built a sensational indoor seating area equipped with air-con the combats the summer heat.

Inside hasn’t changed but as always the cabinet display is impeccable and every product imaginable is featured. I had my eye on about 9 items but I needed to stay on point as the 🥧 warmer was calling my name. Just on the 🥧 warmer, holy moley it was impressive. Totally full, lighting amazing and i couldn’t wait to get started.

The team has assembled a terrific menu that also features a 🥧 of the month. For the purpose of this review I went with one of my favourite flavors and that was “Chunky Steak” as soon as it came out of the warmer I knew I’d made the right decision.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money - $7.50 was great value considering the 🥧’s size and weight. The 🥧 was also full which was a huge bonus. 🥧’s priced in the $7 to $8 dollar range seem to be the normal these days and this one was well worth the money 9/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio - Totally full !!! Nothing more to say. 10/10

3. Flavour - Bloody beautiful !!! The meat chucks were massive and the gravy sauce tasted magnificent. Up there with the best chunky flavours I’ve ever had. Loved it 10/10

4. Pastry - The color, shape, shrinkage and stability were all exceptional. The pastry flavour was beautiful and incredibly flakey. The bake thicknesses wasn’t far away, but both bakes were slightly underdone (wet lines) apart from this, the overall standard of the pastry was great. 8/10

5. Serving Temperature - Perfect temp !!! 10/10

🥧🥧 47/50 🥧🥧

As soon as I finished my 🥧 I was informed that it was baked by Robert’s & Kristy son Brayden who happens to be a first year apprentice
and gee wizz he did a great
job. The flavour was the standout for me and I didn’t want the experience to end. The meat chunks were massive and melted in your mouth and the gravy sauce also was devine. $7.50 was well priced and the 🥧 was full. The pastry bakes needed a little tweak but that’s understandable coming from an apprentice. Brayden did esceptionaly well on the color, shape, shrinkage and stability all these couldn’t be faulted. Overall the young fella has done a sterling job with this product and I would easily have another one. Great work mate. Highly recommended.

Maree, Robert and Kristy a massive thanks for having me back again. I absolutely love coming to this bakery and spending time with the team. You guys are quality operators and your bakery is up there with the best I’ve seen. Getting there takes hard work and sacrifices and you guys have worked so hard and made huge sacrifices to make this happen. Great to see you guys again and I’m looking forward to seeing you all later in the month at the upcoming Official Great Aussie Pie Comp.

Gin Gin is a awesome little town that well and truly caters for caravans and travellers. The rest area (Free) 1.2km from town was a great overnighter (dump point & dunnies) and in town there is heaps of parking especially for caravans. If your traveling up the Bruce Highway defiantly add this little town to your travel plans.

Pastry Creations Bakery in Maryborough is next on the list followed up by the Pomona Bakery. Both visits were sensational so keep a eye out for these.

As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.

Had a awesome Friday night in Melbourne doing two things I love, watching footy and eating 🥧’s.

Storm didn’t get the result but a huge congrats to Jai Bowden Storm #255 on a awesome debut, first of many mate.

A big thanks to the Rhi from Storm HQ for looking after us in the Fiji Lounge and shed passes.

We smashed a tonne of mini party 🥧’s in the lounge and they were up there with the best I’ve had.

Whether it’s NRL or AFL who’s your favorite team? And what’s your favourite party 🥧 brand ?
