One of the best things about living on the island is the beautiful shift in the seasons.
One day it’s salty skin, sandy feet and long summer beach days.
The next, it’s wild and woolly weather, the windows rattling, the ocean roaring, and everyone curled up on the couch together.
It’s hard to beat.
The last time I caught up with Shae from COMIN IN HOT Fire Wood Supplies , I had a few less greys, a few less wrinkles, and that little gremlin in my arms wasn’t even a thought yet.
Although, I have a sneaky feeling she was already very much in my wife’s plans.
A lot has changed since then, but Shae’s incredible service was exactly as I remembered.
He rocked up, shook my hand, and the first thing he said was, “Your little fella is playing great footy for the Bulldogs.”
How good is that?
That’s the sort of thing you love about a local business. It’s not just a delivery. It’s someone who knows your family, remembers the little things, and takes the time to have a proper chat.
Kinda wish I had a few cold beers ready, to be honest.
And he doesn’t just dump a big pile of wood on your driveway and wave goodbye. The bloke literally stays and stacks it.
It’s proper old-school service from someone who clearly takes pride in his product and what he does.
I’ve met the dude twice, but honestly, it felt like we grew up together. We talked fishing, hunting, community, business, and everything in between.
That’s the magic of a great local business. You’re not just buying firewood. You’re supporting a good person doing good work in the community.

As good as Shae is as a bloke, and as good as the service is, the actual redgum firewood is worth every penny.
Clean, dry, and a great mix of mid-sized pieces that get the fire going nicely, with some bigger slow-burning logs to keep it ticking along.
And thank God he stacks it, because I’d probably still be out there in the dark right now trying to get it done.
