Meet the Maker: Mamang Top

How did you become a woodworker?

“My name is Mamang Top, and I started working with wood around 2016–2017.

It actually began with a coconut fibre brush.

I posted a brush made by people in my local community, and from that post, a customer reached out asking if we could create a custom product.

At the time, I didn’t know how to make it myself. So I reached out to two people who already had the skills, a brush maker and a woodworker, and we worked together to make the customer’s order.

That experience made me curious about wood and how things could be made from it.

I never went to school to learn woodworking. I learned by experimenting, making mistakes, fixing them, and trying again.

What started with one customer request slowly became something I wanted to keep learning and developing.

And that’s how my journey as a woodworker began.”

Apparently, slow is kinda chic now. We’ve been doing it all along. 😜

It’s not always the fastest or easiest way to make things, but it means we know the people behind our products, we work with the materials already available, and human hands are still very much part of the process.

So yes… we’re calling it chic. 🤎

Not all wooden spatulas are made the same.

Ours are hand-carved from solid manikara wood, also known as sapodilla. It’s dense, tight grain, make it naturally strong and more durable than bamboo or beechwood.

🐦🍷 A Blue Wren, Five Months in the Making

What looks like a simple wooden wine holder and door stopper is actually the result of five months of collaboration, planning, problem solving, and craftsmanship.

When our client, The Leprosy Mission Australia, came to us with a photo of a Blue Wren, the brief sounded simple: recreate the bird in timber.

But handmade is never as simple as it seems.

Every curve, feather, and proportion had to be carefully interpreted and carved by hand from solid timber. And because this piece needed to function as a wine holder as well as a sculpture, the balance had to be exact. The angle, weight distribution, and overall form all had to work together so a wine bottle could sit securely in place.

The journey wasn’t without obstacles. There were design revisions, sampling rounds, and production delays. At times, communication with our artisan in the village was difficult, while our client eagerly awaited progress. Working directly with rural artisans means embracing a different pace, one without factory production lines, project management dashboards, or instant updates. Instead, it relies on patience, trust, and the dedication of skilled craftspeople committed to getting every detail right.

And that’s exactly what makes handmade work so meaningful.

Behind every finished piece is a story of perseverance, craftsmanship, and collaboration. Each challenge overcome becomes part of the product itself.

Today, we’re proud to see this Blue Wren Wine Holder and Door Stopper brought to life through our partnership with The Leprosy Mission Australia. 💙

It’s a reminder that the most meaningful creations take time and some things are worth waiting for.
