Every year, retail marketing guru Kevin Moore, jumps on a large motorcycle somewhere in the world and goes on his annual “Retail Roadtrip”. During each trip, lasting a few days or a few weeks, he visits as many towns and cities as he can and walks their stores – large and small. It’s a bit of a “busman’s holiday” in some respects but Kevin loves it as it gives him a real feel for what’s going on i
n, and around the world of retail. What’s trending, what new technology is bursting onto the scene, what the retail environment is like, all from the shoppers perspective. Along the way, he will often meet up with influential retailers but during his store walks he always makes sure he stops and talks with anyone and everyone involved in retail. After all, some of the best insights and ideas come from the shop floor, not just the executive floor; the stockroom not just the boardroom! In mid 2009, after one of his tours, he caught up over coffee with a producer/director friend of his, Nigel Miller, telling him about some of the amazing things he had seen on this particular road-trip across the middle of the USA. Nigel was mesmerised even though his own experience in retail consists of one annual trip to the same menswear store and reluctant outings to his local supermarket. “What great stories and what amazing insights into the world of retailing – fascinating stuff!” Nigel declared. “We should capture these and share them with people who work in and around retail stores – and maybe capture one of your road-trips for a TV show!”
So we started on our own journey, and here’s the website to share that passion. Our intention is to create a place that will prove indispensable to retailers, manufacturers, distributors and anyone associated with retail, large or small, young and old. Our aim is to make it useful, but more importantly a showcase for each and every one of you out there who works in or visits retail stores for a living. And remember, our goal is to create a thriving community of passionate people, who are connected because they choose to work in retail stores. A community where we can all share our ideas, experiences and opinions with the aim of improving our stores, the experiences of our customers, team members, and suppliers – and maybe grow and share some profits along the way.
