WHY do some school's working with and out of 'RUDOLF STEINER's Educational philosophy (as an adaptation of Ancient India's 'Gurukul Education), refer to schools as 'Waldorf', when there is no such thing as a 'Waldorf educational philosophy'. 'Waldorf' was only the 'vehicle' via which Steiner's edn philosophy was practised in the very frist STEINER school in Germany. Waldorf only refers to the school building named after the 'Waldorf-Astoria Cigarette Factory' in Germany, where the very first school was opened. The factory owner, Emil Molt, asked Steiner to design and run a school for the children of his cigarette factory workers in Stuttgart in 1919. Because the school was funded by the factory and located there, it took on the name 'Waldorf' and has nothing to do with the creation of the educational philosophy! So why perpetuate (advertise!!) the product of a cigarette factory, manufacturer of a substance damaging to a child's health and well-being?

Denmark just spent 540 million kroner replacing classroom laptops with paper textbooks. A country that pioneered digital classrooms just reversed course completely.
Starting the 2026 school year, Danish schools go mobile free by law. Phones get locked away at the start of each day. Separately, Denmark's own data protection agency ruled that Google Chromebooks were transferring student data outside the country without proper consent, a violation serious enough that entire school districts have already been ordered to remove them.
The country that once handed a tablet to every child under ten just admitted the experiment did not work the way anyone promised it would.
A teacher there with thirty eight years of experience called the phone ban the best decision of his entire career. His words, not mine. Students playing together again. Talking to each other again. Test scores climbing, not falling, once the screens came out of the room.
Every school system chasing "digital transformation" over the last decade built its entire strategy on a promise nobody actually tested first. More devices would mean more engagement. More engagement would mean more learning. Denmark just published the most expensive rebuttal to that theory in modern education history.
I think about this constantly running a school myself. We measure technology adoption as progress by default, rarely as a decision that needs the same evidence any other major policy change would require.
Twenty two years in education taught me this. The newest tool in the room is not automatically the right one. Sometimes progress looks exactly like a country wealthy enough to have tried everything, choosing to go back to a book and a pen instead.
If you lead a school right now, ask yourself honestly whether your technology policy was built on evidence, or simply on the assumption that newer always means better.

WHAT IF

Instead of worrying about whether we should give children gold stars for participating, or gold stars for being the best; we instead involve them in real life activities, where the end result of the activity is, itself, the reward.

Teach the children gardening, woodworking, repair skills, fibre arts, sewing, working with beautiful surroundings. Raise animals and have children learn to care about something, other than themselves. Have children help out an elderly or challenged person, or just someone ‘in need’.

Teach children what is really important in life: wisdom, kindness, patience, generosity, empathy, sympathy and compassion, including love and selflessness.
