REPOST: Mowanjum Arts

Ornorr-jirri are traditional ceremonial dance totems created and used by Ngarinyin and Worrorra peoples of the West Kimberley, Western Australia. They are carried by dancers during Junba, an important form of storytelling that brings together song, dance and ancestral history.

The totems are generally handmade and painted with culturally significant designs. Their shape, design, songs and performance are connected to ancestral knowledge, and in some cases are received through dreams by songmen or composers.

Ornorr-jirri can represent ancestral beings, Country, natural elements, objects or historical events. One well-known example is a Junba created in 1963 in which the totem represents Captain Cook's ship and sails.

During Junba, the Ornorr-jirri help connect dancers with Country, ancestors and cultural stories, bringing this knowledge into the performance and continuing these traditions for future generations.

Larry Gurruwiwi is a force of nature. A multi-instrumentalist with an incredible voice Larry is also acknowledged as the greatest traditional Yidaki virtuoso aka Didjeridoo player in the world. It’s a role he inherited from his late father the legendary Galpu Clan leader, Mr D Gurruwiwi. Larry continues his father’s legacy working with his brothers and extended family under the name of “Malawurr,” which is the Galpu name for “Family”.

Larry and his brother Vernon will be at ABT this weekend conducting our next Yidaki Healing Session.

Following in the footsteps of their father, the late legendary yidaki maker Djalu Gurruwiwi, Larry and Vernon continue his legacy as Yolnu healers, sharing generations of cultural knowledge through the healing power of the yidaki.

What to expect:
While formats vary, a typical event might include:
• Welcome and cultural introduction
• View excerpts from films about Larry and his father
• Yidaki performance and songlines
• Storytelling about Country, ancestors, and cosmology
• A guided “healing” segment (sound immersion)

Participants often describe strong emotional or meditative responses, linked to the instrument’s physical vibration and the cultural depth of the practice.

Spaces are limited. Some seating is available; however, it’s advisable to bring a camp chair just in case.

Kids from the Gunbalanya School were in Darwin last week to take part in the Michael Long Leadership Centre, Make Your Mark, Leadership Program.

The Michael Long ‘Make Your Mark’ Leadership Program—supports school attendance, confidence and leadership through a series of sessions and a residential week in Darwin. This video shows some of the kids having a little 'jam' together.

We’re always glad to be part of this program, welcoming students from remote communities into town for a mix of learning and new experiences.
