Martha Protty, Kungka Kutjara, acrylic on canvas.

As a senior law woman of the Kaltukatjara area, Martha's work draws inspiration from local landscapes and Tjukurrpa.

In this work, she depicts Kungka Kutjara Tjukurrpa. It is the creation story following two sisters who travel through the desert, leaving significant landmarks in their wake. Martha has particularly focused on the cultural site where the two women stopped to rest under two big trees. The work also features the striking desert landscape and Kapi - rockholes.

This work forms part of ABTs latest exhibition - Kapi - Water - from Tjarlirli Art and Kaltukatjara Arts. On at ABT until 30 October.

What a fantastic night the first Indigenous Fashion Projects runway show was last Sunday. Titled 'Carried by our Matriarchs', it was a celebration of culture, country and fashion, with not only the models and designers adorned - the entire crowd was, just like our ABT Manager, interviewed here by Indi and Senator Malarndirri McCarthy - Northern Territory

Following in the footsteps of their father, the late legendary yidaki maker Djalu Gurruwiwi, Larry and Vernon continue his legacy as Yolnu healers, sharing generations of cultural knowledge through the healing power of the yidaki.

What to expect:
While formats vary, a typical event might include:
• Welcome and cultural introduction
• View excerpts from films about Larry and his father
• Yidaki performance and songlines
• Storytelling about Country, ancestors, and cosmology
• A guided “healing” segment (sound immersion)

Participants often describe strong emotional or meditative responses, linked to the instrument’s physical vibration and the cultural depth of the practice.

Spaces are limited. Some seating is available; however, it’s advisable to bring a camp chair just in case.

Join us at ABT for this small, bespoke event and learn more about the yidaki and its healing abilities.

ABT will be closed this Monday for NT's final public holiday of the year - Picnic Day. Whether you're heading to the Darwin Cup or enjoying a quieter day around town, we hope you make the most of the long weekend - it's going to be a big one next weekend with Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair.

ABT Gallery Assistant George Tipo is showing the kids from Ntaria how to play the Yidaki (Didgeridoo).

The kids are participating in the ‘Make Your Mark’ Leadership Program, conducted by the Michael Long Leadership Centre. The program focuses on improving school attendance and student behaviour and includes 15 leadership sessions and a one-week residential program in Darwin. Along with other local corporations, ABT hosts a different group each week during school terms.

Led by the sons of the late legendary yidaki maker Djalu Gurruwiwi, Larry and Vernon have been immersed in Yolŋu cultural, spiritual and musical traditions since childhood. They now share generations of knowledge through the healing power of the yidaki.

Participants often describe strong emotional or meditative responses, linked to the instrument’s physical vibration and the cultural depth of the practice.
