Our staff have been sharing some of their favourite reads over the past month and now it's time to hear from Arlo! Here's what they had to say:

Wait! Hold still, you’ll scare it away! It’s a- Bird book? 🐦🦅🦉📚

I love birds. Nothing is guaranteed to brighten my day quite like watching magpie-larks wander the streets and finches flit about parks, and I haven’t found a better region specific field guide. This book is everything I could want from a field guide: it’s small enough that I carry it in my bag everywhere, it’s organised and easy to look through, it has detailed and beautiful illustrations and descriptions, and a clear plastic cover to protect it from (inevitably) being dropped.

The Regional Field Guide to Birds: Red Centre to Top End organises itself by the environment you'll find these birds in (ex, aerial birds, waders, small perching birds etc…) making it super easy for people to open it up and find whatever you’ve spotted, with concise information on habitat, diet, sexual dimorphism, voice, and behaviour alongside each illustration. Although, don’t worry if you’re struggling to find something- the back includes an indexes sorted by scientific name and common name, letting you have your cake (easy to find bird ids) and eat it too (organisation by scientific name for experienced birders).

Slip it into your handbag for a long drive, pack it camping, pull it out for a Saturday morning coffee on the veranda, or hide it in your back pocket for when you need a midday pick me up (and are as into birds as I am), this pocket edition is perfect for beginner bird fans and experienced birdwatchers alike.

WE ARE HIRING! ✨

A new position has become available at The Bookshop Darwin! This is a casual position (with possibility to transition into permanent part-time), which will involve Saturdays and two to three flexible week day shifts. We’re looking for someone to start as soon as possible.

Duties will include serving customers, stock display, and everything else you have ever imagined working in a bookshop would entail, and then some!! Full training provided and you will be working with an amazing team!

The Bookshop Darwin are delighted to announce that Alan Isherwood will be returning to Darwin to sign copies of his wonderful memoir, Isherwood’s Australia 📚✍

Alan's autobiography is an outstanding example of how one man’s individual journey, combined with a rich family tradition of sharing stories, can unite generations in a stunningly relatable and compelling way.

Alan will be in store from 11am to 1pm on Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th of September!
