In 2021 the Hungarian National Bank (Magyar Nemzeti Bank) issued a 2000 forint commemorative coin dedicated to the Magyar Agár, the Hungarian sighthound used in open-field coursing across the Pannonian plain.

The reverse shows two Magyar Agár in full stride, depicted in different phases of the gallop, with a mounted rider in the background, an iconographic reference to mounted hunting. The inscription MAGYAR AGÁR explicitly identifies the breed, something relatively uncommon in numismatic issues dedicated to dogs.

The anatomical rendering is precise: deep chest, long limbs and lean outline, features consistent with a sighthound selected for speed and visual hunting.

This is one of the few modern coin issues in which the sighthound is represented not as a heraldic or symbolic figure, but as a clearly identifiable zoological subject shown in its working context.

He’s often called the Australian Leonardo da Vinci because he was always sketching ideas, inventing things, and thinking way beyond his time. The mad part is most of us probably learned more about random kings and queens at school than we ever did about him.

So next time you pull out a 50, that’s not just “the yellow note.” That’s David Unaipon, one of the biggest brains this country ever produced.
