TIM'S BOOK OF THE WEEK - Blood, Rust and Steel by Stuart MacBride ( #3 DS Roberta Steel)

***Please note there will be no radio spot this week due to the public holiday on Monday***

This week Tim enjoyed the brand new Stuart MacBride novel 'Blood, Rust and Steel'. Book 3 in the DS Roberta Steel series is another gripping crime novel set in Aberdeen, and is in stock at Devonport Bookshop now.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Acting Detective Inspector Roberta Steel has never been shy, but she’s finally retiring. After thirty years of policing Aberdeen’s underbelly, she’s all set for her twilight years to feature gardening gloves, afternoon tea, crosswords puzzles, and shouting at the telly.

So, when a body turns up in a wheelie bin, it looks like an excellent way to round off her career and go out with a bang. But the Northeast of Scotland isn’t finished with her yet: There’s a violent protest to stop; far-right populist politicians, and sketchy government spooks; a by-election; drugs, dogs, and baby-doll nighties; and a desperate ex-colleague, begging her for help.

With only her Queen Street Irregulars for backup, and the top brass desperate to get shot of her, these final few weeks might just be the death of her . . .

ANNE'S BOOK OF THE WEEK - Land by Maggie O'Farrell

"Definitely one of my favourite reads so far for 2026. This is a big hearted broad sweeping novel set in Ireland in 1865 and Ireland is still reeling from the ravages of the Great Hunger. It is the story of Tomas and his son Liam and their respective journeys but also the story of the land itself. "

ABOUT THE BOOK:
On a windswept peninsula stretching out into the Atlantic, Tomas and his reluctant son, Liam, are working for the great Ordnance Survey project to map the whole of Ireland. The year is 1865, and in a country not long since ravaged and emptied by the Great Hunger, the task is not an easy one. Tomas, however, is determined that his maps will be a record of the disaster. The British soldiers in charge are due to arrive any day, expecting the work to be completed, but Tomas is unexpectedly sent off course by an unsettling encounter in a copse. His life, and those of his family, will never be the same again. Liam is terrified by the sudden change in his taciturn father. What was it that caused such cracks to open in Tomas and how is Liam, aged only ten, going to finish the mapping, and get them both home?

'Land' is in stock at Devonport Bookshop now.

'The Secret Garden Club' - Wendy Lynn Taylor
Can a broken heart learn to bloom again? When Hilary finds her husband of thirty years dead on his way to the compost heap, it is the end of the world as she knows it.

In a fit of grief, she lays waste to every inch of the beautiful garden to which George devoted his life. But nearly as shocking as George's death are the group of strangers who appear at Hilary's door. Announcing themselves as the The Secret Garden Club, they tell Hilary that George was a member and one of their dearest friends. So why has Hilary never heard of them? And have they got something to do with the mysterious mourner at George's funeral, with his favourite orchid pinned to her chest?

While the club vows to restore the garden to its former glory, Hilary makes one of her own: to uncover the truth. But it will mean questioning everything she ever believed about her marriage. Will George's secret break her heart for a second time? Or could it possibly show Hilary the path to a new life still yet to blossom?

As deeply moving as it is hilarious, The Secret Garden Club is an unforgettable story of the green shoots that grow out of grief, perfect for fans of Sophie Green, Joanna Nell and Tricia Stringer.

TIM'S BOOK OF THE WEEK - Frame 37 by Nicholas Shakespeare

Tim's read another brilliant spy thriller this week and can't wait to tell you all about it! Tune in to 7AD on Monday morning for the rundown on Frame 37 by Nicholas Shakespeare.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
John Dyer is living a quiet life when he receives a call that changes everything- an old university friend, Lia, has been killed. Decades have passed since his last heartbreaking conversation with her, but Dyer finds himself driven to investigate. What Dyer uncovers puts him in the path of a political conspiracy with one man at its heart. A man who forty years ago committed a crime witnessed by just four people.

When another of the witnesses dies in suspicious circumstances, Dyer finds his life in danger. To combat the forces arrayed against him, he needs incontrovertible proof - but will he find it in time?

As Dyer chases his leads from Tasmania to Argentina and finally to Michigan, where it all began, he unwittingly pits himself against an adversary more powerful than he could have imagined, in a race as heartstopping as tomorrow's headlines.
