ANNE'S BOOK OF THE WEEK - Ransom by Daniel Silva

"Gabriel Allon is trying to lead a quiet life as a retired spy and now dedicated art restorer but a request for assistance in a missing person's case sees him once again thrust into the murky world he thought he'd long left behind!"

About the book:
Alice Winter, one of Britain's most dazzling socialites, seemingly has the perfect life - a lavish home in posh Knightsbridge, a grand estate in Devon, millions of followers on social media who eagerly await her next post. And when she disappears without a trace while on holiday with three old friends from Cambridge, her desperate husband, the real estate baron Edward Knight, turns to none other than Gabriel Allon to find her.

He soon discovers that Alice Winter is not the woman she appears to be, that she has a reckless side, that she has secrets. But Edward Knight has a secret too, a secret so dangerous that Gabriel will have no choice but to return to the life he thought he had left behind. An old enemy lurks there, waiting for him to make one misstep, waiting for the perfect moment to exact vengeance.

What are we reading right now? Well, thanks for asking! πŸ₯° Here are our current reads:

Mel - The Exquisite Torment of Loving Your Enemy by Brigitte Knightley
I'm only a few chapters in and already I have cackled to myself on the couch, in the break room, and at my dining room table. Top-notch banter, as in the first book, and a critique cricket who absolutely verbally decimates all who venture near it. Hilarious so far, and I can only anticipate a continuation of such.

Em - Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman
This book is absolutely absurd in the best way and I'm along for the ride! Lots of gaming references but you won't get lost if you're not a gamer (I'm not) because it's just generally laugh out loud funny and entertaining. Come and talk to me about it if you're reading it or have already read it!

Anna - The Deal by Elle Kennedy
Such a fun, feel good college romance! Full of banter, chemistry and heart, I am flying through these books like no tomorrow. After watching the TV series, I have become obsessed!

Congratulations to author Omar Musa with his novel 'Fierceland' being awarded the 2026 Miles Franklin Literary Award.

'Fierceland' is available now at Devonport Bookshop.

About the book:
After many years abroad, Roz and Harun return to Malaysian Borneo for the funeral of their father Yusuf - and to reckon with their inheritance. A renowned palm-oil baron during Malaysia's economic rise, Yusuf built the family's immense wealth by destroying huge tracts of rainforest. What his children know is that he was also responsible for the violent disappearance of a man who stood in his way.

Harun has become a successful tech entrepreneur in Los Angeles, Roz is an artist struggling to stay afloat in Sydney. Now they want to return something their father stole from the forests of their homeland. In their quest for redemption they grapple with the legacy of power and corruption, dreamers and exiles, thugs and zealots. Most dangerous of all, they are haunted - by the ghosts of colonialism, the ghosts of family, the ghosts of language, and the ghosts of the forest itself.

A trailblazing journey across the globe, Fierceland weaves the past and the present into an emotionally powerful family saga that plays out at a mythical scale.

ANNE'S BOOK OF THE WEEK - Cold River by Margaret Hickey

"Tenacious Constable Sally White is back - this time investigating the disappearance of a missing hiker which leads her to question how well she knows those closest to her!! A great read." - Anne

Cold River is in stock at Devonport Bookshop now.

About the book:
Deep in the mountains, secrets grow deadly . . .

Detective Constable Sally White knows how easily hikers can go missing in Victoria's high country. But there's something about the disappearance of Louis Taylor, a young man lost up Mount Viking, that's not sitting right with her.

Louis was an aspiring journalist, researching the illegal to***co trade - also known as chop chop - that was once so prevalent in the area. And the last person he interviewed before his hike has just met a gruesome end . . . But with no other leads, and with the search winding down, Sally is forced to accept the young man died in a tragic accident.

Until she learns of another missing person case that bears striking similarities. Astrid Marlowe, a young lawyer, vanished in the same mountains two years before. Were Louis and Astrid simply unlucky hikers lost in the treacherous terrain? Or did they both stumble into something - or someone - they shouldn't?

TIM'S BOOK OF THE WEEK - The Kingpin by A. A. Dhand.

Idris Khan aka 'The Chemist' faces challenging moral and ethical decisions working as a pharmacist on the mean streets of Leeds and Bradford.
A superbly written sequel to Dhand's previous book 'The Chemist'. You will not put this book down, a phenomenally good crime novel.
