Grasses – one of the most important plants in modern garden design. Providing year-round structure, without feeling too formal, perfect for mass plantings or dotted amongst other plants to provide movement and texture. Our own Native Australian grasses are tough, drought tolerant and adapted to our harsh conditions. Over the past few years big strides have been made breeding new cultivars of Australian grasses, with more refined foliage, compact forms and a diversity of colours.
Known for their hardiness, native Lomandras have been a mainstay in landscaping for years. Their downside has always been a tendency to become too big and rangy overtime, making them unsuited to most urban settings. Fortunately, this problem has been resolved, with new breeds developed that are compact and look neat for years to come. Our approach in the nursery is to select a smaller number of cultivars of any particular plant, focusing on those that are the toughest and most useful. In the case of Lomandras, we grow four cultivars, Tanika, Lime Tuff, Frosty Tops and Lomandra Grass Tree. Similar in size and form, all stand around 600mm wide x 600mm tall. Tanika has a dark green foliage, Lime Tuff a vibrant lime-green, while Frosty Tops has a striking silvery tone. Unlike the slightly soft sweeping form of these three Lomandras, Lomandra ‘Grass Tree’ has a distinct upright form and narrow dark-green leaves, reminiscent of traditional Xanthorrhoea grass trees.
