The Dundee Social & Recreation Club is more than just a venue, it’s a volunteer run community space built by locals, for locals.
What many people don’t see behind the scenes, is what it actually takes to keep the doors open. We have around 30 volunteers who give up their time to help run the club, organise events, serve drinks, clean up and maintain the grounds, all because they care about keeping a community space alive in Dundee.
Unlike larger venues operating 7 days a week, we are only open Friday nights during the wet season and Fridays & Sundays during the dry. That means our kitchen can only purchase limited stock to avoid waste and spoilage, which does affect meal pricing. We do our absolute best to keep prices affordable while still covering costs.
Even when our doors aren’t open, the expenses don’t stop. Electricity still needs to run to keep the cool room operating, insurance still needs to be paid and maintenance is constant. Recently we’ve replaced electrical equipment and installed new fans to improve the space for everyone.
The club is also the only community space in Dundee that provides a place for meetings, workshops, sports, events and social gatherings for the wider community.
We try to keep our events a bit different to what other venues in town are offering to give our locals variety. While competition is part of life, we hope the community understands that every dollar spent at the club goes straight back into supporting this local community space, not profits.
We kindly ask the community to support us, encourage us and understand the realities of keeping a small volunteer run club operating. Constructive feedback is always welcome, but negativity and constant complaints can be incredibly disheartening for the volunteers working tirelessly behind the scenes.
