Thanks to volunteer members of CBCA NSW Branch and here particularly some of the team at CBCA Newcastle Sub-Branch who tirelessly work to host a range of celebrations throughout the year celebrating books and reading with young readers, teachers, librarians, creators and book enthusiasts.
And thanks to creators Matt Ottley and Tina Wilson who support events such as this week’s two days of workshops to celebrate the 2026 CBCA National theme ‘Symphony of Stories’ in the Newcastle Region. Matt and Tina shared their project ‘The Sound of Picture Books’ with students and teachers and librarians. And they are legends. Thank you! 👍👍👍👍👍👍

There’s a lot of positive talk about this adult sci- fi- and I’m 100 ages in and loving it. I’ve been a huge fan of Jaclyn Moriarty and her books for younger readers for a long time.
This has been launched into the adult market. It is quirky, fun, compelling and fresh, an interesting take on the time travel narrative. I can see why readers are talking about it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It’s always brilliant to catch up with children’s author extraordinaire Maryam Master . And I loved discussing Maryam’s upcoming middle grade novel ‘My Tiny Universe’. We need more nuanced stories like this one for young readers.

There is no doubt that Ashleigh Barton is a major talent, one of Australia’s leading children’s authors whose body of work continues to grow. And her latest middle grade novel is possibly her best work to date. This is a wise and warm hearted story, full of gorgeous quirky characters and it is, as we would expect, a beautifully written middle-grade novel.
This is ideal for readers 8 plus, raising lots of questions about life. And readers witness that life offers many questions that will never be answered … and that is okay. Congrats Ashleigh. Congrats Hachette Children's Books ANZ This deserves to be on awards lists next year! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’m a huge fan of Aussie kids’ author Samantha Wheeler- so I was keen to read her latest middle grade offering. Interestingly this was written as part of a PhD thesis focusing on using narrative to encourage kids to connect with nature.
‘The Lost Island’ is a fast paced survival and adventure story with twists and turns, ghosts and extinct animals. And the text is accompanied with illustrations by Anke Noack - a perfect balance.
This is a top read for independent readers 8 plus and a great read aloud for Stage 2 and 3 classes. Congrats Samantha Wheeler | Children’s Author and Anke Noack Congrats UQP
