We use GPS data collected from our RTK GPS enable survey vehicles or tractor systems to build elevation and drainage models to help understand frost and waterlogging risks.

It is with the utmost shock and sadness that we heard of the passing of James Heggaton, a valued client and a good mate to all of us at VRT Solutions.

James was a true leader in agriculture β€” always pushing the boundaries, never satisfied with the status quo, and consistently among the first to back new technology and put it to work on the ground. His drive to achieve more and to farm at the leading edge set him apart, and it was a privilege to work alongside him.

Beyond the work, James was simply great company. What began as a professional relationship became a genuine friendship, and his character, energy and good humour will be deeply missed by our team.

Our thoughts are with his family and close friends and colleagues at EGC at this difficult time.
A funeral service will be held at the Wattledale workshop at 2pm on the 19th of June.

You're seeing the soil's profile unfold:

β†’ Red = low conductivity (sands, gravels, rocky material, dry zones)
β†’ Blue = high conductivity (clays, moisture accumulation, waterlogging, salinity)
β†’ The transition between 50–80cm is where the subsoil character reveals itself

EC alone doesn't tell you what's there β€” it tells you something's changing. Depth-to-subsoil. Moisture retention zones. Salinity risk. Waterlogging hotspots. All mapped continuously across the paddock.

Conventional EM gives you two readings and a straight line between them. This gives you the curve β€” and the curve is where the story is.

Nitrogen - variable rate tips for 2026.

In light of the dramas the ag industry is facing. A few important points to remember if you are planning variable rates of nitrogen:

1. Normally we don’t recommend VR N at seeding. Soil tests are so unreliable for N, it is difficult to assess properly. If there is more moisture, then use a little more, if its drier, use a little less, so you hopefully have some in the pocket for later. KISS rule here!

2. Scout before applying: Extremely important that you assess that you are not applying N to areas of weeds. Basic stuff, but often overlooked due to time pressures. Please ensure that your paddocks are clean before zoning for VR N.

3. When NDVI data is calculated, it can ONLY be between 0 and 1. It is common to find early season 2-6 leaf cereals range from 0.05-0.2, and later season crops (Zadoks 45-65) can range between 0.1-0.95. Treat with caution as the range plays a big role in accuracy of VR N.

4. Non-wetting: Staggered emergence can mislead classification of zones, and NDVI scale is important! Soil maps (EM and Gamma) can help here.

5. Canola – After 5% flower, NDVI data becomes increasingly useless. However, the last 2 weeks of cabbage normally have a good correlation to yield at the end of year. Please refrain from using NDVI data on Canola once the flowers come out.

6. If you have soil maps, even setting 2 rates (light country, heavy country) can help mitigate risk in a year like this. This can be done any number of ways.

7. Remove or reduce saline/waterlogged areas as zones of application. This is particularly easy with EM maps or historical yield or biomass data.

Hope this helps. At the very least, we can optimise what we have and do the best we can in 2026.
