Australian-made acoustic guitars don't get much better than this. 🎸

The Maton ER90C — all solid timber, built in Box Hill just up the road, where Maton have been making guitars since 1946.

Solid European spruce top. Solid Indian rosewood back and sides. AP5 Pro pickup and a cutaway body, so it's as happy plugged into a PA as it is on the couch at home.

It's the one we keep quietly handing to people who came in 'just for a look'.

A proper guitar setup will change your playing more than a new guitar will. 🎸

Myth we hear every week in Footscray: "I'd be better if my guitar wasn't so cheap." Honestly? Nine times out of ten it's not the guitar — it's the setup.

Here's what actually makes a guitar feel hard to play: the action's too high, so you're fighting the strings. The neck relief's out, so it frets out up the dusty end. The intonation's drifted, so it sounds sour above the 5th fret no matter how well you tune it. And the strings have been on there since... look, we won't ask. 😅

Sort those four things and a budget electric guitar can play beautifully — genuinely better than an expensive one that's been sitting neglected in a case. It's the cheapest upgrade in music, and it's the one almost nobody makes.

So before you go shopping: get it set up, put fresh strings on it, and see if the problem was ever really the guitar. 🙂

This week in 1981, a brand-new channel called MTV crackled to life — and music was never quite the same. 📺🎸

At 12:01am on the 1st of August, the very first thing it aired was, fittingly, The Buggles' 'Video Killed the Radio Star.' The opening words? “Ladies and gentlemen… rock and roll.” Forty-five years ago this week. 🤯

Suddenly you didn't just HEAR your favourite band — you watched them, learned their moves, clocked exactly what guitar they were playing (and then quietly started wanting one). A whole generation picked up an instrument because of something they saw on that screen.

Funny how it still starts the same way: you see someone play, and you think “I want to do that.”

A 12-string acoustic guitar is pure magic — and the Epiphone Songwriter DR-212 is the most fun you can have with one in Footscray right now. 🎸

Here's the thing about a 12-string: those doubled courses, an octave apart on the low strings, give you that lush, chiming shimmer you know from a hundred records — the Hotel California intro, all that jingle-jangle Byrds sparkle. Strum one open chord and it sounds like two guitarists turned up.

It's a square-shoulder dreadnought — select spruce top over mahogany with scalloped bracing — so there's real projection and low-end holding up all that shimmer. Balanced and warm, never brittle. Honestly one of the loveliest ways into 12-string world without needing a specialist's budget.

🔴 Orange Rockerverb 50H MkIII — the amp that's on more pedalboards' riders than we can count. Crushing high-gain tone, but clean it up and it sings too. The real deal.
🎸 Ibanez AZ2204 Prestige — a bolt-on shred machine that does the work of guitars twice its price. Nut width, fretwork, the lot — genuinely lovely to play.
🪵 Tanglewood TWJFE Java Folk — a stunner with a solid cedar top and that gorgeous Java mango back and sides. Warm, woody, and punches well above its weight for the money.

The tree-of-life inlay alone is worth the price of admission. 🤤

This is the Ibanez JEM7VP — Steve Vai's signature, the one with the monkey grip, the disappearing pyramid fretboard inlays, the works. It's the kind of guitar you walk past on the wall and just have to stop and stare at.

Under all the theatre it's a properly serious player, too — Prestige neck, DiMarzio Evolution pickups, set up to shred right out of the gig bag. Whether you're a Vai devotee or you just want one guitar that makes every other one on the rack look a bit boring, this is it.

"I'm too old to start piano." 🙃 Nah — and here's the honest truth.

Plenty of adult beginners surprise themselves with how fast it clicks — because you practise with intent and you actually want to be there. You don't need to read music on day one. You don't need two hours a day either — 15 focused minutes beats an unfocused hour, every time. And with a weighted-key digital piano you can practise whenever, headphones in, no one judging.
