Geckostrands

Geckostrands Geckostrands is a textile studio creating eco dyed wool and cashmere wearables. Geckostrands has grown out of a passion for Australian eucalypts and textiles.

The process of natural eco dyeing and my art teaching experience became the basis to create geckostrands. I create scarves, and hand knitted art objects that can be worn. Collecting leaves in Tasmania’s Huon Valley, where my studio is situated, using the water, the seasons and collecting the relics of past times. The scarves emerge from a process of design, placement and brewing. The alchemy of nature produces fine wool and cashmere objects of desire.

DOT40 celebrates the enduring legacy of DOT (Designed Objects Tasmania) — four decades of design, craft and culture in Tasmania.
The exhibition represents the living continuum of design through three interwoven strands. Notably, several practitioners occupy multiple spaces within this structure—demonstrating that true legacy is not static history, but an active practice that simultaneously shapes the present while supporting the next generation:
• NOW: Selected by a jury to reflect the current landscape of Tasmanian making, this strand features contemporary works by Ruby Yeh, Liam Starcevich, Stu Williams, Linda Fredheim, Kate Bowman, Lachy Taylor, Andrea Barker, Duncan Meerding, Scott Van Tuil, and Chris Clinton.
• LEGACY: Nominated by the contemporary cohort, this strand celebrates the ongoing influence of the discipline's current leaders. It pays deep respect to the techniques and guidance continually advanced by Kevin Perkins, Nick Randall, Neil Hoffman, and Ross Straker, anchored alongside Fredheim, Van Tuil, and Clinton. Their dual presence across both strands perfectly captures how today’s working practitioners simultaneously provide our foundation and drive our present.
• HORIZON: Selected by the NOW makers, this strand introduces emerging designer Ollie Walker, building upon established foundations to actively shape where making goes next.
Join us for the official opening:
