The Chart & Map Shop The world's most awesome peddler of maps, charts and books plus loads of other stuff vaguely related

A fresh chapter, and a brand new address. Chart & Map Shop is now open at 4/73 Troy Terrace, Jolimont, and we'd love to see familiar faces and new ones walk through the door!

A great little spot that feels right at home for us. We're still settling in, so the shop is very much a work in progress at the moment. Bear with us while we get everything just right, there's more to come.

Good news, the website is now live again too. So whether you'd rather browse from the couch or pop in and say hi in person, we're ready for you. See you soon! đź‘‹

After some time quietly behind the scenes, we’re excited to share that Chart & Map Shop will soon be reopening under new ownership with a strong focus on reliability, customer experience, and the community.

When the opportunity came up to continue the journey of this much-loved business, it felt incredibly special to us. Chart & Map Shop has long been a place connected to adventure, the ocean, and a real sense of community, and we feel very grateful to now be part of its next chapter.

Over the past little while, we’ve been carefully settling in, learning the ropes, and getting ready to open the doors again with fresh energy. For now, we just wanted to say hello, introduce ourselves, and let you know that Chart & Map Shop will be back very soon.

We’re looking forward to welcoming familiar faces, meeting new ones, and being part of your next adventure 🌍

In Canada, the wood frog (Rana sylvatica) has a remarkable winter strategy. It can freeze solid, with its heart and breathing stopping entirely. When temperatures rise, it thaws out and quietly resumes its normal life, no drama, just one of nature’s more understated survival feats.

The walking palm, Socratea exorrhiza, is native to the rainforests of Central and South America, including Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama and Colombia.

Here’s the strange part. It doesn’t just stand still. With its spindly, stilt-like roots, it can slowly “walk” toward better sunlight. As new roots grow toward brighter light and older ones die off, the tree subtly shifts position over time, just a few centimetres a year.

Did you know Mount Everest is not actually the tallest mountain on Earth? 🏔️

That title belongs to Mauna Kea. Measured from its base on the Pacific Ocean floor to its summit, Mauna Kea rises over 10,000 metres, with more than 4,000 metres hidden underwater. Everest, by comparison, is the highest mountain above sea level, reaching just under 9,000 metres.

Everest wins on altitude. Mauna Kea wins on sheer size. Geography loves a technicality.

Did you know hippos can’t actually swim? 🦛

Despite spending most of their lives in water, hippos are too dense to float. Their bodies are packed with heavy bones, so instead of swimming, they walk, run, or bounce along the riverbed. They push off the bottom, glide for a moment, then touch down again, like underwater moonwalkers.
