✨ What we’re reading: ✨

Riley can’t stop talking about Valencia by Michelle Tea, an autobiographical novel about looking for love in the bars and parties of q***r San Francisco’s riotous underbelly. Or, as the author puts it, ‘a snapshot, more or less, of my 25th year on earth, written not how it happened but how I felt it happened’.

Funny and gross at times, but always swiftly followed with some of the most devastating and tender prose Riley’s ever read, the amount of life Tea lived in one year (or rather what is gathered in this book) is huge. 🎆🌞🏳️‍🌈📚

We are trilled to now have Dancing Unconscious in stock, the debut monograph from local photographer Duncan Wright.

Documenting a confronting three year period where photography became a meditative practice, the photographs in the book draw upon intense emotions in times of pure joy, sorrow and deep resonating change. Accompanied by a short and darkly humorous poem considering the act of dying, written by Duncan’s mum (and discovered hiding in notes on her computer), Dancing Unconscious acts as a diary for a period of time where the duality of life is heightened by the overwhelm of our every day. Signed copies on the front table now! 🖤📚

✨What we’re reading: Slovenia and Italy edition 🗺️📚

Sharon has continued to read her way through the stops on her Eurosummer trip.

Next up was a visit to the banks of Lake Bled in Slovenia, where she got through I Saw Her That Night by Drago Jančar, a novel following a few years in the life and mysterious disappearance of a young woman in wartime Slovenia.

Her European literature journey finally came to an end in Canelli, Italy, where she finished The Moon and The Bonfires by Cesare Pavese, a seductive masterpiece of memory and betrayal set in the Italian countryside. 🍷📚

✨What we’re reading: Prague edition 🗺️📚

Sharon is still reading her way through the literary stops on her Eurosummer trip. Next up is Prague, where she of course spent her time with Franz Kafka, dipping into his absurdist novel, The Trial (pictured here alongside the Kafka statue).

No bookseller’s visit to the Czech Republic would be complete without a trip to The Franz Kafka Bookstore, where Sharon picked out The Ear from Czech author Jan Procházka, similar to The Trial in it’s exploration of systemic terror and human powerlessness.

Stay tuned for more literary dispatches from across the ocean. 📡

✨What we’re reading: Budapest edition 🗺️📚

Sharon is currently reading her way through the stops on her Eurosummer trip. First up was Budapest, where she dove into Abigail, a novel by Hungarian author Magda Szabó.

Abigail is a thrilling tale of suspense about a headstrong teenage girl who attends a Calvinist girls’ school in eastern Hungary during World War II.

Stay tuned for more literary dispatches from across the ocean. 📡

Freshly unpacked is this winter treat from Maggie O’Farrell: her new historical novel, Land!

It’s 1865 in Ireland, and in the wake of the ravaging Great Hunger a father and his reluctant son are working for the great Ordnance Survey project, mapping the entire country. Land is a story of buried treasure, overlapping lives, ancient woodland, persistent ghosts, a particularly loyal dog, and how, when it comes to both land and history, nothing ever goes away.

A few weeks ago our resident baker Kristy hung up her bookseller’s hat after 10 glorious years at our little shop.

Kristy is known for her bespoke book-themed gingerbread biscuits that have delighted many authors. But day-to-day she has brought so much colour and light to the bookshop, keeping us fed with homemade sourdough loaves and sweet treats, entertaining us with her wicked sense of humour, frequently going above and beyond for customers and colleagues alike, and providing the best book recommendations for readers of every age. Truly a pillar of our little shop.

Her local fan club need not despair too much, though, as all that Kristy-magic will only be a short walk away! Kristy’s very own business, Blobfish Paper Co, is opening very soon just around the corner on Market Street.

We can’t wait to see all the whimsy and wonder she always brings to the local community thrive in this new space. Make sure you’re following on Instagram to be first through the door! Farewell Kristy, and thanks for everything! 📚💗✋
