Several items of news for you this week, reader!

Firstly (because everyone loves them), new blossom buddies have arrived! We can't seem to keep these in stock, but we hope we've ordered enough for a few weeks this time. New in include frogs, dinosaurs, foxes, corgis, red pandas, koalas, tri-coloured cat, deer, crocodile and chicks, as well as many of your favourite - sloths, lions, white cats, golden retrievers and more. They'll be on the shelves over the next few days.

Secondly—and this has been difficult to keep a secret—there will soon be a new room open at Paper Bird! We have been busy tidying, discussing, ordering and building to turn the glass studio at the back of Paper Bird into a specialist art space. It will be the perfect space for Story Time sessions (especially in the winter), as well as an exciting program of new regular workshops, school holiday workshops, and guest sessions too. For those wanting to run their own arts programming, for children or adults, you’ll be able to book the space too. Visit the link in bio for more information.

After hearing how much everyone loved our Illustration Market in May, we’ve decided to host our first Christmas Art & Illustration Market. Applications are open now for artists and illustrators, including youth creatives. Visit the link in bio for more information & applications.

We also managed to squeeze in a stocktake this week. This is no small endeavour - we had 13,500 items across four rooms to scan. We went to sleep still hearing beep-beep-beep. But with two teams of two, plenty of hot drinks from Moore & Moore, and some sugar, we managed!

We also hosted Book Clubs last week, and they were riotous as usual. Our older club is very insistent on playing Werewolf (a fantastic drama game - highly recommended - you only need a few slips of paper and a willing narrator to get started), and our younger club is very much enjoying making up wild and wacky stories. They rated our June book club picks very highly ('Kid' by Peter Carnavas received a rating of 1000/10, which is very impressive).

That's all for now. Until next time!

Helping select gifts for a new baby or someone very young is one of our favourite requests. We usually like to mix a beautiful book for baby's new library (like The Big Book of Australian Nursery Rhymes (by Fremantle's own ), a classic like 'Baby Days' or 'Where is the Green Sheep', or perhaps a little library of tiny books) with something fun to do (like a lift-the-flap book, or a first block puzzle), and something soft to cuddle (like Koko the Kangaroo and JoJo the Joey, or Waddles the Goose Comforter). And has the most beautiful cards to top everything off too!

Pop in to shop or visit our online shop (store.paperbird.com.au). We'd love to help you select something special for the very young ones in your life 💛

This is a story for those who need a little reminder to come out of their shell & frolick every now and then. It's a magically illustrated and masterfully paced story. Inside you'll find excellently patterned bugs, fire breathing frogs (dragons), dancing, castles and a riot of blossoms and green leaves. Nature and freedom are depicted so beautifully.

We recommend this story for children aged 2 - 5 and their families.

'Milo the Knight' is writen by Grégoire Laforce, illustrated by Charlotte Parent (), and published by Milky Way Picture Books ().

The 2026 Book Nook Exhibition is here!

We received fifty-one incredible entries, and choosing one winner for each category was not easy! There was clearly so much love, craft and excitement poured into each entry, and we had great fun discovering which story a Nook originated with, or examining all the details of an imagined world. There are Nooks about penguins and Nooks about space, Nooks about the forest and the sea and fairies and fashion boutiques, and Nooks about some of our favourite stories, like Tiddler, The Tempest, One Piece, Detective Beans & more.

But a Winner there must be! Without further ado, congratulations to our 2026 Winners:
Little Ones: Olivia Naumann - Alone
Junior Fiction: Arthur Stewart - A Tree House Story
Middle Fiction: Emmy Eslick - The Girl and the Ghost
Adults: Christine Nguyen - The Rainbow Fish

Please visit the shop to collect your prize!

Congratulations and thank you to each and every Book Nook artist. We can't wait to share more of your wonderful creations. We love them all. Thank you for participating and bringing so much magic to our shelves.

You can vote in the People's Choice Award until the 24th August 2026, so try and choose your favourite (we know it's hard).

Come & explore!

How magical is our new Eric sculpture? The artist is Erin Maree Fischer, who created the most wonderful Book Nook in our 2024 Competition, inspired by Eric (Shaun Tan). Because we are hosting a new Competition, Erin has taken her Book Nook home to enjoy, but she has very generously made us a new Eric for our shelves and we couldn't be more delighted. Thank you Erin! We are sure it will delight visitors to the Book Shop as much as your Book Nook has.

P.S. We are in the process of getting this year's Book Nook Competition entries ready to exhibit now! From this Saturday onwards you can come and explore fifty-one tiny worlds tucked in between books on our shelves. Winners announced this Friday 💛

This fantastic illustration is from one of our all-time favourites: Spider in the Well by .hgn, published by . It's got it all: a magic wishing well, conniving townspeople, an opportunistic spider, and a newsboy who is determined to bring them all to JUSTICE.

It's a great book for ages 3 - 5 who love funny and clever stories with unexpected endings and characters who don't do what you think they will do. The illustrations are fantastic, full of drama and facial expressions that'll make you laugh. And it's got a great rhythm and dialogue for reading aloud, making it very entertaining for story times and one-on-one reading.

Is the second week of the school holidays feeling... long? We can help!

We've got puzzles (for all ages, babies to adults), card games, game books, activity books (including ones that teach you how to make your own games), search & find books, origami books, sticker books, collage books, and an excellent range of school-holiday-inspired-stories to dive into too, like the Magic Faraway Tree and My Family & Other Animals.

Diary of a Bookseller, Edn. 29:

It has been like Christmas here! We've been scurrying to and fro sorting deliveries of mice & rabbits, finger puppets (including tiny monkeys and sweet white mice), beautiful journals, Miffy plushies, softies and comforters for babies and—of course—books! The shop is brimming with beautiful storied things for young people.

We have also started up another first - a regional Book Club! Thanks to the enthusiasm of the librarians at , the Paper Bird Book Club now has a Port Hedland chapter. They hosted their first Book Club this term and we hear it was a great success. At our first meeting this term, our Fremantle Book Clubbers wrote them some snail mail—and they wrote back! Their letter is waiting on the desk until our Book Clubbers return on Friday 31 May and we can't wait to open it.

Psst: reading this from somewhere afar and interested in starting up your own regional Book Club through Paper Bird? Reach out to Holly & Mim through hello(at)paperbird.com.au!

The shop has been bustling most days and we've loved seeing how many people make a School-Holidays-Special-Visit-to-Paper-Bird, often taking home a pile of books to read, a puzzle to do, a game to play, or a book full of craft activities.

Our Book Nook Competition has returned these school holidays and entries are starting to trickle in this week! Entries close on Saturday 18 July, so there's still plenty of time to get making this week. The Competition is open to all ages (including adults) and there's a $50 Paper Bird Gift Voucher to be won in each of the 5 age categories, plus a People's Choice Award. Visit paperbird.com.au/competition for more information, or find the link in our bio.

There are plans for some exciting events rumbling away in the background, including the return of art classes (and a new space opening up in the bookshop) and a Paper Bird Christmas Art Market. We'll keep you posted!

Until next time 💛
